Immigrating to the UK

I know the rules, I bought a house here a couple years ago and my son is busy with a purchase right now.
It's in the fine print somewhere.
Would have loved to use the first time buyer assistance...

They should put that down somewhere.

why can you not spend more than a million of your own money? a year?

Nobody said you can't spend it. You just can't spend more than R1mil outside the country. Called exchange control. Well you can but you have to jump through hoops for SARS and SARB,

Yes, true. For the type of work I do, salaries are from £70k to £100k in London.
£100+kpa is a bit more comfortable
£28k may be the average over there, the avg here is what, R15k ? Who lives on an average?
£80k is acceptable, but I wouldn't want to support a family on that as single income, i'm sure many do on much less
fellow from the intl moving place said they're moving quite a few households to the uk daily, of course that excludes those going with a suitcase and a fistful of quid

The issue is with property prices. London is nuts. After taxes, pension and whatnot, your £80k gets you around £4k per month. A £300k mortgage will set you back £1400 per month, which doesn't leave you all that much left over for all your other expenses. Possible? Absolutely. But you're not getting away with not really paying attention to your budget.

absolutely yeah, london isn't cheap, hence £80k being acceptable for some but far from ideal, at least for me.
properties wont be purchased for some time for some migrants.

Yeah and £300k doesn't get you much at all in London. I'm looking at £325k in Manchester and with the recent price drops I'm seeing some good options. I imagine a year or two ago I'd have great options though.

we're heading a bit south of surrey, about 40 minutes to waterloo station fwiw

Other than that I think its safe to say that we have shaken the last bit of PTSD from SA.
Just you wait for a power dip or a lightbulb to blow.

You'll never be 100% PTSD free my friend.

The power tripped the other day and my TV rebooted.

I got a massive shock / fright, but I think its safe to assume thats due to "Loadshedding PTSD"

On a serious note, I do agree with you. I have some unfortunate childhood experiences being exposed to violent crime. PTSD hasn't disappeared, but its much better.

The alert levels drop down dramatically but the PTSD sticks around.

I still get very tense when I hear fireworks... (and they love their fireworks here)

Look what nearly ran me over today!

I have had incorrect orders delivered to my house on a few occasions. If its not too far from my house, I drop it to the correct recipient over the weekend or just return to sender.

And before you think Im painting myself as a good samaritan, I am always thinking of this:

I still have PTSD parking my car on the street overnight. The one and only time I ever parked a car on the street in ZA it wasn’t there in the morning and while that is hardly traumatic I still have this “will it be there in the morning” feeling.
