Immigrating to the UK

I remember coming back from the UK the first time in 2006 and thinking that SA Coke (full fat) tasted so much sweeter and better. Strangely, Pepsi in the US also tasted better than Coke, but not on the UK or SA.

The zero drinks are worse though if you do a bit of research. But yes, I miss my coke. I'm glad they changed the recipe as it helped me to stop drinking this really nice junk.

Now it's just coffee and sparkling water.
Googling youtubers isn't research tho

A date night in London absolutely sucks the £ but it's such an experience. Hope you and the missus (and the credit card, lol) have a good one

That show is seriously goose bumps worthy. Good call.

Sounds epic!

Thanks all, we’re so looking forward to it.

Probably going to do it on a weekday to keep costs down. I know it will be an expensive “date night” but so what. YOLO right? Lol

I’m not one for musicals or theatre. But the wife says she hates musicals and she’s taking me to this - so that should say it all really.

Any tips or other things we should do whilst in London for the day?

The plan is (expensive)

Go up in the morning and do more sightseeing (been to London a few times) to places we have not seen yet.

Then have dinner at The Shard and see the Lion king show that my wife has been going on about for years.

Then stay over at a hotel and get the train back to the East in the morning.
Thinking of doing likewise albeit on Broadway on that leg of our trip. :) I'm hoping to spend as little time in London as possible.

London Eye is always good. Will get some decent pics if it's a clear day. Natural history is very interesting if you into museums. Camden market but can get very busy. Walk down Oxford street if you have time to kill and stop off at Hamleys.

If you are Harry Potter fan then do the Harry Potter Tour. It's not cheap but well worth it.

Would not have called myself a musical or theatre person either but they are great.

If you are in the theatre district there are loads of good shops and restaurants. Places like Forbidden Planet if you(or your kids) are into figurines. Waterfords across from Trafalgar isn’t spectacular but the book range is different to ZA so worth a look if you like books.
Victoria embankment is nice for more cost friendly take outs.

Camden which Gregmcc mentioned is a must for me, love it there. Close to St Pancreas so you can stop in there on your way in or out. It gets insanely busy though which can make getting food service a little frustrating.

Food? London? Borough Market

@Dave - Nearly R200/kg... for wors?

Your problem is pricing it in a weak currency, it's not much different to decent sausages from the supermarkets.

£2.99 is not a lot of money, consider the adult minimum wage is £10.42 an hour or ZAR242.96 if you were to convert.

Comparison

Exactly which is why I am not even looking at what our trip to London will cost is Rand. That’s just pointless when we have money in the UK in pounds already.

I get by noicely with the saffer butchers here but I'll deffo check out that Lidl product. Every braai is always tons of meat of differing varieties anyway

Fortunately I get paid in £ and spend in R so R89/kg sounds better. I expect I'll get used to paying out of my arse after a while.

I wondered; you mentioned a few years ago (I think) that your family prefers the US over the UK - how come you’re still in SA what keeps you here out of interest?
