Immigrating to the UK

Got laid off last week, saw the writing on the wall a bit so wasnt a too big of a shock

When I was not looking I had recruiters hounding me on LinkedIN , now things seem a bit quiet

Have an interview this week , and another one not scheduled yet, hoping to get going again quickly , this boredom sucks.

Not being able to get SC (Security Clearence) yet is quite a disadvantage, about 1/3 of the enquiries are for SC jobs around here (West Midlands)

SC has me confuzzed because you can only get it if the company you’re working for applies for it on your behalf. You can’t just walk in somewhere and say “hi, I’d like SC, please”. And if you do have it, it’s only for the duration of your role or for the specific job you’re doing. Once you leave, you lose it. So no idea how SC clearance can even be a requirement on job posts.

55mi drive. I think I might do just that.

They maybe mean the ability to get SC

Yeah that’s the thing. It’s only valid for the company you’re currently working for iirc. Can’t be transferred. The new company has to apply and pay for you to get it.

How long does Security Clearance last?

The length of your security clearance should last for the same amount of time as the project or assignment it relates to. Even if you finish working on that assignment, your clearance will stay valid for a year afterwards in case you are called back.

If you find work on a new assignment during that year, your clearance can be transferred to your new employer/end-client if necessary. If a year passes and you have not found another security cleared role, you will need to start the whole process again with a new sponsor.

So there you have it. The hiring company just doesn't want to start the whole thing from scratch, is how I read it?

Ah right so it CAN transfer. Good to know.

So basically the job posts are saying that you need to still be within that 1-year window.

Yeah pretty much. It’s a pain in the arse for everyone involved. You can go through the government I think but previous company I worked for used a 3rd party and they sucked.

Did you had to have been a UK resident for min 5 years?

I already was at the time so not sure. It was pretty hardcore, though, because the client my team worked on was the government’s insolvency agency.
