Immigrating to the UK

Not an emigration question but I'll be visiting UK in September and do not want to enable MTN roaming nor do I want to connect to public wifi.

How do I get connected immediately - landing at Heathrow.

I'm not sure what other options you have really?

Guess you'll just have to find a Vodafone shop in the airport and get a sim

Thanks, that's what I'm asking - can I just get a SIM and load cash - no RICA or anything?

If your cellphone has e-sim functionality you can use Airola.

Got shafted with my home insurance due to bicycle claim.

Current price: £25 a month, renewal £45, comparative quotes as high as £75pm. I ended up negotiating with Admiral and they dropped it to £33 (paying in advance this year, because I didnt know insurance is more expensive monthly last year)

Car insurance next month, Ill try AA :)

Edit: what in the world are you driving with such low insurance??

Just a Ford Focus, though it's gone up, it was around £290 last year. I was expecting a much bigger increase after all the press stories about massive increases this year.

Has anyone managed to successfully apply for SA dual citizenship, after aquiring another nationality?

fk. Need to renew my SA passport. Appointment for that booked 30 August, it's a trip up to London...
For this I need my UK birth certificate. Stupid South African rules - why the **** do I need to provide that? (it's to prove how I got dual citizenship - but as per above post **** them it's irrelevant). I also need my marriage certificate, divorce decree etc... Why? Nothing's changed since I last renewed my passport. Bloody banana republic bullshit.

Can I find my UK birth certificate anywhere? Of course not.

So, let's see how quick the GRO is ....

So thankful I renewed my SA passport in 2022. Don't have to worry about that **** for many years.

When it comes time I will just book a 2 week holiday into SA, fly in a day or two before my appointment and if Home Affairs is as good as it was for me last year then I would have the new passport within a week.
That way I shouldn't need to provide any of these other things.

Hopefully it's a lot quicker now with vfsglobal.

I did mine a few months ago (prior to vfs) Took me 2 months to get an appointment after emailing every day for a update. No one replies to emails and phones never get answered. Took another 4 months to get my SA passport. What a **** show!

VFS have appointments available tomorrow (!!!)
@killerbyte I reckon you might still need all of that stuff, as that's what the consulate is asking for and there's no special reason to request it just because I live here now.

I thought it wasn't required anymore? The requirement was deemed unconstitutional.

Lots of waffle in it, but here’s the important bit:

The order
[47] In the result the following order is made:

1 The appeal is upheld with costs including the costs of two counsel where employed.
2 The order of the high court is set aside and replaced with the following order:
‘(a) It is declared that s 6(1)(a) of the South African Citizenship Act 88 of 1995 is inconsistent with the Constitution and is invalid from its promulgation on 6 October 1995.
(b) It is further declared that those citizens who lost their citizenship by operation of s 6(1)(a) of the South African Citizenship Act 88 of 1995 are deemed not to have lost their citizenship.
(c) The respondents are ordered to pay the applicant’s costs including the costs of two counsel where so employed.’

The Mrs and I were discussing this just yesterday because we’re getting our ducks in a row before applying to become Poms. Weren’t sure if the DA had managed to get anywhere but it appears they have?

I was planning to do this - but you can't make a booking with an international phone number.
Also, if they are delayed you're ****ed as only you can pick it up when it's ready - biometrics required and no nominated pickups.

I didn't do the rentention of citizenship paperwork because the way I understood it was that only those who got citizenship for another country later needed to retain. My birth was registered with UK and SA, so I had citizenship for both from birth.

@Sinbad I had my UK passport before getting my newest SA one, and they didn't ask for anything more than my SA paperwork. Maybe its because you are doing it through the consulate.
