Immigrating to the UK

The idea is the everything will be on the Mrs name; since she's a citizen.

We are seeing properties staying listed for months at a time. I think in our price range (above £2k a month) property isn't moving as quickly as the lower end stuff.

Once I have my Skilled worker visa, I'll also have the right to rent and as I understand it I just need to get a share code of sorts off the government site to prove it.
You both (all the tenants) need to be able to prove your right to rent.

So without your visa, you won't get far, I'm afraid.

It’s not just the right to rent. You’ll need to go through the vetting process which is typically outsourced to the likes of Vouch. This happens after you put a holding deposit down and sign paperwork and both tenants go through the process. Rental agents on my end won’t even let you view without both being present.

Some agencies are more reasonable. Private landlords who deal directly with tenants, too.

OpenRent may be helpful in that respect.

But you're not mistaken--getting a rental is a pain if you have no local history, and even more difficult if you can't view in person, but I believe some are more relaxed since the COVID saga that necessitated video viewings.

All the same... good luck!

You'll come right if you're persistent, but you may have to settle for something below your preferences at first.

Yeah, it was a painful process for us, so I’m not saying it can’t be done but rather that it’s more often than not a lot of pain and legwork to get established. Some have it easy, most have it hard, but as time passes things normalise and you just slot in and get to choose what you want.

Looking back I just remember it being a fairly stressful time as we were haemorrhaging “rands” on short term rentals juggling a lot of balls figuring things out.

Good luck.

I was so lucky, the 3rd place I stayed at (through airbnb) the owner took pity on me and allowed me to rent directly from her for as long as like, while looking for a permanent place. When I finally found a place she drove me there with a boot full of old kitchen stuff she didn't want, I'm still using some of it now haha. Real sweet old lady

I think the fact you’re looking at the more expensive end of the market (and not in London or immediate surrounds iirc?) would mean you just might find it a little more civilised than in the more congested cheaper market.

Yes, no where near London. Will be in East Sussex.

Did enquire about a property yesterday. Agent offered to do a video viewing even after we explained we weren’t in the country and relocating.

That is awesome and the flip side of it all. You’ve got no history so you are initially treated like what they expect from the average “renter”. Then you prove yourself worthy and respectful and get treated accordingly. People really are good for the most part.

Consistency is key.

Just keep on enquiring, you will get a feel for the market, agents and landlords.

Ancestral Visa application submitted.
Biometrics appointment for 18 December.
Once approved, I will submit applications for my wife and kids.
When you submitted the Birth Certificate of the parent/grandparent for the ancestral visa was it just done electronically?

My kid wants to get one and we're trying to figure out if my mother needs to send her actual birth certificate here. The site just says

the full birth certificates of the parent and grandparent your ancestry claim is based on

We ordered a hard copy online, and then scanned that one for digital upload. They never asked for the hard copies, all the documents were digital/scanned and submitted online.

I see you got the feedback you needed.

I've since received mine as well as my dependents AV and pushed the applications through just before the increase earlier this month.

I've been in the UK for 2 weeks and managed to:
- Pick up my residency certificate
- Register for NI
- Convert my license to a UK one
- Open a bank account
- Find a place to rent (What a misssion!)
- Gone for an interview which went extremely well and looks promising
- Heading out to look at potential cars to purchase this week.
All while working (Sometimes more than 8 hours a day) remotely for my current position in CPT

I return to CPT on Friday and then leave for good with the wife and kids on the 27th March.

Guys that swapped their licenses...did you have to send in your BRP along with the application to prove your identity? The wording on the document is confusing

My wife did, yes.

Interesting point, BRP cards go away at the end of this year. I wonder what you'll use going forward.

The best part is that the locals here will complain that everything has gone down and its worse than it was.

All online. You'll be able to check / prove your immigration statuses through an online portal.
