Immigrating to the UK

Yeah I’m applauding it. Healthy budget.

At this stage I think the wife will need to go over before my son and I. I thought pets would be the issue. But even offering 6 months rent upfront doesn't seem to move the needle much. Also, everyone tries to call instead of responding to mail. And having a non UK number isn't helping.

At the moment, it's "on the cards" for the wife to go at the end of May - and hopefully by Mid July have a place setup for us.

Its pretty easy to get a UK number and an eSIM if I recall. They arent nearly as strict as getting RICA'd in SA. But yeah, we had a substantial budget, and had a relocation agent helping us through my employer and it was still a mission finding a house. They were super strict on the right to rent, and basically we landed and the first place we went to was the rental agents to show that and our passports.

Yeah getting a sim is easy. Can just pick one up at the airport when you land.

Fortunately my wife is a British Citizen and will take the lead on finding us a property. Hopefully it works out - otherwise things will get a little complicated but will make it work, regardless. Fortunately we have family and friends in the UK to assist if need be.

Sorry, probably wasnt clear in what I was saying. I think you can actually get an eSIM while in SA, and then use it from SA on voice over WiFi. Might help slightly

Silly question, if I may, but can't you stay with family/friends for a bit while looking for a place?

It'll make things substantially less difficult for you, I think, and diminish a bit of stress. Plus, it's easier to make a good impression on landlords in person. Assuming you're dealing directly with them, at least.

I hope you come right.

Alas, if you were coming my way (t'North) I'd have been able to help a bit with a property going up for £750pm. I know the parents of the landlords (an absolutely lovely pair).

Oh, that’s an idea. Thanks I’ll look into it.

Unfortunately there doesn’t seem to be space for us at family / friends. So might end up booking an Airbnb or something.

I left SA last week, stayed with a mate in Surrey and just arrived in Plymouth yesterday. Staying at an Airbnb while I look for something permanent but jeez it's a knife fight here in the 1K a month range for rentals. If anyone has any advice for finding a place it would be greatly appreciated!

Already looking on OpenRent, Zoopla, Rightmove etc but wondering if going to letting agents and speaking to them in person would help at all?

Give the agents a call. That's how I found the house I'm currently in. They had me view it before it even went on the market and I snatched it up.

We found our place in Kingston after randomly walking into an estate agent’s office because we couldn’t find anything anywhere online. Worth a shot.

I would. They can also contact you before they list as well, especially if you look like you will not give hassles.

14 days before my wife leaves.

I have had a tension headache since last week and my wife is climbing the walls with trepidation.

My 9yo son is mostly himself but has long conversations with everyone but me about how he feels about all this, hopefully that changes when my wife has left as it is either me or his sister and at the moment they have a bit of a feud going on (again I believe it is 90% due to their stress and uncertainty over the whole situation).

My 15yo daughter has gone quiet, much less long explanations of her day at school and friends shenanigans, goes to her room and keeps herself to herself, teenage angst distilled.

It feels like a mix between going on a holiday excitement I felt as a child, getting onto a tall building and looking over the edge, going out to sea and not being able to swim back, and of course sorrow/separation anxiety.

14 days from now will be like a small death but yes, then things at least get started.

Good luck. It can be overwhelming in the beginning with so many changes but take it one day at a time and things will slowly fall into place.

Agreed.

And try to work together on this. It's too easy to take out frustrations or fears on those closest to you but they're not in a position to deal well with it. Clichéd but teamwork makes the dream work.
