JOHANNESBURG - Striking workers at Impala Platinum's (Implats) Rustenburg operations vowed on Tuesday not to return to work unless their minimum pay demand was met.

They went on strike five weeks ago, demanding that they be paid a minimum of R9000 a month.

Worker Mothobi Mobeang said rockdrill operators went on strike on January 20 when they did not get a bonus paid to miners.

Workers are currently earning R4000 and want an increase to R9000 - after deductions and taxes !

My maths is poor - but that's a 125% increase ?
 
Well there's talk of shutting down some platinum mines as they are not profitable in the current economic climate. Carry on striking...
 
Its crazy, instead of being happy to get their jobs back, their are demanding an exorbitant amount of money compared to their previous salaries. Profitability of mines has already been going down, so the increase in wages would obviously be a negative factor, especially with the huge demanded increase. They should hire other people who would work for R4000 and release the striking ones.

TIA - I would fire the whole bunch.

Then I would hire a whole new workforce. Wtf? R4000 is better than a lot of people are doing atm.
 
Typical strike tactics, start off with crazy demands for like a hundred billion dollars, then "negotiate" down to what they really want.
 
Fire the lot of them and close the mine or fire the lot of them and/or get some cheap labour from outside SA - just to teach them a lesson.

No. Even in mining the labour isn't 100% unskilled - they still need some basic training. Many of those who were fired were hired back, simply because the mine needs their skills. While it would be nice to start with a virgin workforce, the training time required would effectively close down the mine for some time.

Yip it is "sad" but there are plenty that will do the work for r4K but as always soon they too will strike and toi toi.
