I have it on good authority that Telkom are embarking on an excercise to "educate" ICASA on various technical issues ina bid to overturn certain portions of the ICASA ruling.

I am appealing to anybody with any expertise in network architecture, network topographies or any such skill to offer their services to ICASA free of charge and to act as moderators in the discussions that are to take place at ICASA.

Without such support, ICASA are extremely vulnerable to a Telkom snow job.

Please PM me if you are able to or willing to assist. I will contact Mandla Langa and ask him for advice on how to keep your participation anonymous and ask him to make the offer of help to the new Director on our behalf.

Thanks
Le Pod

Great idea Peapod!

How about getting senior network engineers from the various ISP's to help out. I'm sure they are the most experienced in discussing the current ADSL network architecture.

The ISP's provided very valuable input at the ADSL Public Hearings. More than once they contradicted what Telkom uttered, like for instance that the capping is not done by the ISP but rather SAIX.

I'd suggest you try and contact Vortexia. Seeing as he's always bragging about how much Telkom hates him and how he's considered the best of the best I reckon him and Kei would make a wonderful addition.

Let's educate Telkom :D

while you were away we lost mr langa - been replaced by Paris Mashile..i would send offers to the lady who chaired the inquiry..not sure what her name is but she sounded kickass in telling telkom where to get off the bus on safm pmlive (with jeremy maggs and ike pahla...) this evening

What was Telkom doing at The ICASA hearings then?

I am not sure how ICASA works, but I should imagine it should be much like a Court of Law, where both parties are present at any form of discussion or decision as mentioned above by Peapod.
Failing to do so would be deemed biased.

We all had our day at the hearings.
At that stage Telkom could easily have presented all this information to ICASA.
The 46 people that did presentations took the time out to construct well thought out content.
What was Telkom doing?

Try the IOZ mailing lists ... lot of ISPA members lurk there.
Good idea, I will email the IOZ ADSL list now...I just have to subscribe my myadsl.co.za addy to the list as the last time I was asked to expose myself online [something about "netiquette" whatever that is :D]...

Message has been dispatched to the IOZ ADSL mailing list...:)

Is it confirmed that ICASA can have representatives present to validate Telkom's arguments ? Just wanted to make sure before i start contacting contacts .... ;)

I have a question regarding the ADSL line rental charges.
Is it more expensive to maintain equipment to enable 512Kbs than for 384 and 192Kbs? Surely it's the same 2 wire and the same DSLAM and the same....
Surely it only affect bandwidth usage - which is suppose to be the ISP's problem?
Sorry Peopod, which I could assist - guess my knowledge isn't up to scratch for a debate.

I make the assumption that they can call upon whatever expertise they see fit to call upon.

I think we should take this discussion in a closed forum format, way to much public discussion about strategies...
my 2c..

Peapod, I'll volunteer, I can rope in the SysAdmin team I work with and some of the UUNET people as well.

Your message didn't go through btw...
I received a copy of my email - subject:
"[IOZ.ADSL] Re: ICASA ADSL Findings - calling anybody with any expertise in network architecture, network topographies..."

[I did not send it to IOZ.LEGAL since it's more technical in nature...]

Are you specifically subscribed to the ADSL list?

At enormous risk to myself I am willing to help. I would need to do some homework if you are willing to accept my help. Peapod, is there a chance you and I can discuss the matter on the weekend via IRC or something? I am sorry I am so slow to respond to this.
