Important note when upgrading from ADSL to VDSL

Frequencies won't matter on the backhaul side (in this case)...

Most of the older DSLAMs (ADSL) use the older ATM backhaul links.

All MSANs (VDSL) use metro-ethernet links.

So, in theory, it should solve your congestion issues.

Thanks Mickey!

I'm in the process of upgrading to VDSL, and replaced my modem with the Billion Bipac 8800 bridged to my Asus RT-N66U router.

This didn't come with any VDSL filter, so using the same one I previously used for the ADSL and phone line. I went to Telkom today to try get a VDSL filter/splitter, but the guy had no idea what I was talking about, and said the one I had should work fine. Should I be looking online for a specific one to order?

The filters you have will do just fine.

They are blocking the lower voice frequencies which do not change when converting to VDSL.

Thanks for the feedback, discovered my upgrade went through on Friday when my connection stopped working. Just had to change the modem settings from ATM to PTM but all good after that

ok, excuse the stupid questions, been out of it for a while, so looking at the map I got VDSL available where I stay.
I'm on a 10Mb ADSL line at the moment.
Exchange is apparently 20Mb capable, I'm assuming that is if you stayed on ADSL.
Whats the available speeds for VDSL?
And guessing I will need a new router, I've split my router and Wfi into 2 devices, run a cheaper TPLink 8840 router and a very high end TPLink Archer C7 Wifi unit, just need to replace the router, if needed.

You can have 20Mbps ADSL, it's just that your upload stays at 1Mbps instead of 2Mbps and VDSL has less overheads.
VDSL depends on distance, it's either 20/2 or 40/3 (not sure on the 3, could be 4). ADSL is 20/1, 10/1, 8/1, 4/0.5, 2/0.5

I got 10/1 ADSL at the moment, pretty close to the exchange.

Back to old question, will I need a new router ?
or is it just settings my side and their side?

Hi Jonathan,

Ye also been scanning pdf's quickly, looks like I'm good up to 24Mb with the 8840T I have at the moment, and I know my exchange is 20Mb capable.

So guessing all they are doing is offering 20Mb ADSL or 20Mb VDSL (which as you stated would imply a new router)
For R45/month dif I'm def going to jump to 20Mb link
I moved my entire setup Telkom->MWEB over the wknd.

Not a fan of Mweb, but good luck.

Got to say, very impressed compared to Telkom, line speed is allot better, and service desk/contact is great, I have one guy I email and he makes changes etc as I ask.

but then there is a reason why I do this on a month/month basis, when their attitudes change I can move.
