Hi MyBB,

I'm working in Texas, I have seen a few RHD Jeep Wrangler's on sale, so I would like to buy one and use it for a year or two before I return to South Africa.

I'm on L1 visa so I've never given up South African residency nor attained US residency, will this fly with the Authorities in SA?

Thanks

The rules are pretty simple. You can only import a second-hand vehicle into South Africa if it is a right-hand drive and you have owned it for at least a year before you attempt to import it.

Seems a sa citizen returning from work abroad only need to have owned it for 6 months, gotto be rhd though as you cannot register/license a lhd vehicle here.

+1

The apartheid era developoed a mind set and business philosophy in many industries including the motor industry of isolation and protectionism.
The current government has maintained many of those same ideas, hence the ridiculous policies and taxation of importing vehicles as well as the exhorbitant prices we pay for new vehicles.

News24 where have you been?

So like you will be paying R300000 or there about for the vehicle, and then still pay transport duties and then still pay like 45% import charges? Rather get the same vehicle here for 1/2 the price.

I would check with an importer, we had a colleague import his land rover from Jamaica and it was classified as personal goods and minimal taxes were applicable.

Jeez your right, Its actually cheaper to buy one in South Africa, I thought I would be saving some money. Another motivating factor was that I've been using Hyundai Elantra for the last 3 years, I would like to get some thing different, with fuel costing about $1.7/gal I thought a petrol guzzler would be nice to have so instead of buying a LHD vehicle to replace by current one, I would buy a RHD one use it, then when ready to come back to SA just move with it.
