Improve ram performance

Is there a software program that stops all non vital programs operating on XP so you can load a game and it gets the max resources available?

If you know any other programs that can improve ram performance do tell

Start->run->type msconfig

Go to the startup tab, disable whatever you don't want to run at startup and away you go

Additionally, if you feeling brave. Go into services tab via admin tools from control panel and change settings to manual from automatic... and reboot, those things that need to start will then be running, others will just be inactive unless called on by a program.

Further, goto www.sysinternals.com and get:
Process Explorer : http://www.microsoft.com/technet/sysinternals/utilities/processexplorer.mspx to see what is running, and where it's running from.
AutoRuns : http://www.microsoft.com/technet/sysinternals/Security/Autoruns.mspx to see exactly what is started when windows starts, msconfig does not give you everything.

afaik...zone alarm has a feature called game mode and your new control panel the the latest nvidia drivers has a feature just for what you are looking for
