Telkom has announced enhancements to its free Wi-Fi offering, which is available to non-Telkom customers.

Users were required to connect to its free Wi-Fi access using a solution that entailed the sending of an SMS to acquire a unique pin.

As far as I know this SMS costs R1, so is it really free?

Not sure if worth it. Cell C, MTN and Vodacom have rush hour bundles that work out cheaper than this, I think. If it's 50MB/30 min you're spending the money on, rather get those. Alternatively connect to AlwaysOn after your "free" R1 Telkom bundle depletes.
