Hi Guys

I've been using Iburst for almost a year now, I've got the desktop modem connected to a Omni antenna with a 5m cable.
Originally I was so grateful to get coverage (With the omni antenna, speeds went from almost non existent to about 50kb/s max) which was good enough until now where I want to try and maximise Iburst midnight offering.

What would be the best way to try and increase my signal or max it out?
Would a directional antenna have been better
Should the omni antenna be mounted higher? (At the moment its as high as I could put it with the modem still being in my pc room)
Should my modem be connected directly to the antenna?

What would you guys suggest?
Also, if I where to mount the modem right at the antenna, would I then have to run a USB up to it as well, or just a network cable?

Would also like to know any info on this ... please

thanks ;)

Welcome to MyBroadband.

It is not recommended to put your modem outside, it is for internal use only.

It is recommended to have Line of Sight (LoS) to tower.

Desktop modem can use USB or LAN cable.

Possibly, but I am getting excellent results with the omni.

I extended my antenna cable by about 6 or 7m to allow the iBurst modem to be close to my PC but have the antenna as high as possible. What I lost due to the longer cable I more than made up with the increase in height.

Another option would be to put the iBurst modem in your roof, provided it is kept well ventilated and dust-free or outside, provided you put it in a decent enclosure.

Just the Ethernet will be fine.

Hey, thanks for the reply

The 6m or 7m, is that over and above the 5m that the antenna came with? Where and how can I get cables to extend my antenna?
I have thought about putting the modem in my roof, I'll probably try extending the cable first, if that doesn't work, then I'll have to go that route.

Yup, total is between 11 and 12m.

I got the SMA connectors (one male and one female to make an extension) and some RG58 cable from Poynting.

I suggest you try putting the modem in the roof (and the antenna outside) first just to see if there's an improvement. If there is then try extending the cable.

mm, mine is on the curtain rail, cause I get the best singal there. Will look at the roof option. :D Omni is a fail for me.

well here is a tip, i owna omni antenna and it didnt improve any internet speeds for me, where the iburst sales fooled me into believing it will reduce my latency for international gaming. But here is a tip rather use the USB when connecting to download at night. and connect through the iburst app, and you'll be able to see your cap as well, and see if iburst actually stole cap from you or not. thats what i always did.

just a tip

I just check my iburst usage email each day. Been lucky so far, no BW has gone missing. And we are finally receiving our invoices via mail as well, almost an year later.

Antenna Types

Hi,

I have a desktop modem. Can I use an omni antenna on it? And what's the difference between the two?

I was under the impression that I couldn't use the omni on a desktop for some reason (but after at last getting a response from iBurst, yay a month later) they quoted me on an omni (and a ridiculous delivery fee).

An omni antenna will fit/work fine with a Desktop Modem. It connects via a pigtail cable. (included)

I have one myself, it will only improve signal if you get bad signal with the desktop modem only.

If you have good signal already, it won't improve your DL speeds or latency.

If you want one and are close to midrand, you can have mine with the pig tail. It's doesn't work for me at all.

The other one you get is the flat panel, but you must have line of sight for it. That's what I have heard.

I am above the base station in height and my neighbour has a few large trees planted between me and the base station. All a need is a chainsaw and the base station to be tilted...

Just goes to show how bad Iburst is. I am not as close to the base station as you are and have houses and shyte in between and I still get better latencies than you. ;) Can't match that download speed though.
