I've got an email some guy send me who does them locally - I looked into it for my G4 GTI in 2004ish .I'll post the information if I can find it.

I'm planning on doing this also. But will do a test run on my Bakkie first. There is a local place who imports all the components for this and seems like a good deal.

There are some really cool interfaces, and skins for those interfaces - the only problem with this is that the majority of cars will probably come factory fitted with this sort of thing in 5 years.

Fixed unit, unable to be upgraded and lacks certain qualities which can be sorted out yourself with the correct machine from the start.

That is the problem with the currently built in units from what I could gather reading up on it. What you see is what you get. Finish and klaar :(

If I was carting kids around I probably would, a bit of a waste with just me behind the wheel. All I need is a head unit that can play Mp3s and all is good.

I wanted to build one for my Corsa (awaits mocking) just for the fun but after the appearance of USB front loaders I just got one of those instead, so much less effort :p

But with EEE PC and all the variants coming (rather the variants than the actual EEE PC) out now it's mega easy to do, just take one of those, get a DC->DC regulated PC that output's the voltage that the "laptop" charger uses and you're set.

My friend had one the other day with a 2GHz CPU in and composite video out (exactly what you need), should be enough for most things (IE XVid but you won't be decoding 720p on it ;) ), costs around R4k add R1K to that and you have all the wiring and regulated PSU and another R1K or so for a screen and possible another R1K for the materials like that stuff you use to make plastic molds, haven't done the plastic stuff myself but I'm told it's not too hard and there's plenty of info online.

Using regular desktop parts for this sort of thing would be wasteful for a large list of reason I don't care to list.

I also considered the car PC option some time ago...
but ended up with 80gb HDD + DVD mp3/4, dvx etc.etc. + radio player and 8" touch screen.
Does all I need it to do...video, audio, TV, radio, aux. in/out etc.etc.
No internet or btoot though:eek:
but what the heck...can't surf and drive...or can I?:D

Hey houz that for a campain:
Arrive Alive - Don't Surf & Drive!:D

Thing is, I have found a local supplier for imported goods specifically for in-car PC's.

I'm thinking of giving it a shot, but only if there is interrest in such a venture. No use doing one for my car as a demonstration vehicle but there is no interrest :(

Ummm....I've tried that...imported it all myself...no much interest (especially after you mention the prices)...freezed the idea for now.

The problem is
1- you have to have good team with a lot of passion & understanding to be able to do excelent job. (nothing less!)
AND
2- passionate custromers wiling to pay for the custom work.

1=ok
2=????...well it looks like in SA it's mostly hot air (and lots of it)
Not enough to sustain that bussines for long.
Oh yes...3- a lot of 'other' places where they "will do it MUCH cheaper"

Is the tread 'working' better now;)
