In future, the internet could come through your lightbulb

The tungsten lightbulb has served well over the century or so since it was introduced, but its days are numbered now with the arrival of LED lighting, which consume a tenth of the power of incandescent bulbs and have a lifespan 30 times longer. Potential uses of LEDs are not limited to illumination: smart lighting products are emerging that can offer various additional features, including linking your laptop or smartphone to the internet. Move over Wi-Fi, Li-Fi is here.

Wireless communication with visible light is, in fact, not a new idea. Everyone knows about using smoke signals on a desert island to try to capture attention. Perhaps less well known is that in the time of Napoleon much of Europe was covered with optical telegraphs, otherwise known as the semaphore.

Alexander Graham Bell, inventor of the telephone, actually regarded the photophone as his most important invention, a device that used a mirror to relay the vibrations caused by speech over a beam of light.

In the same way that interrupting (modulating) a plume of smoke can break it into parts that form an SOS message in Morse code, so visible light communications – Li-Fi – rapidly modulates the intensity of a light to encode data as binary zeros and ones. But this doesn’t mean that Li-Fi transceivers will flicker; the modulation will be too fast for the eye to see.
 
Old idea, rehashed... been done before.. been used before by Vodacom to create peerling links between basestations. This was in 1999 already.
 
/remembers stuff about sniffing data off Telkom diginets by capturing the flickering of the LEDs...
 
So I can't dim the lights or turn them off and stream a movie? What happens if someone obstructs the line-of-sight between my device and the bulb? The tech sounds interesting, but I'm curious to see how it works in real-world situations. It sounds a little but clumsy.

It will be like the TV remote... get disconnected when someone stands in the path.
This is nothing new like I said... already been done with IrDA and others

Yes, the flickering LED is old - that's the basis for any fibre optics. In the wireless space, I remember as a student studying the LED beam across Durban harbour, able to phase-sync to filter out noise from sunlight. There commercial alternatives to Wi-Fi point-to-point links have been around (as you say) for many years and claim to be improving all the time.

For Li-Fi, I guess you have to think of a different setting. I track global Wi-Fi developments and, as the article says, one of the key issues is interference caused because Wi-Fi is so successful that every device will have one. The future is not about long range connectivity, but short range, high throughput.

It is early days for Li-Fi. I see 60GHz Wi-Fi (which is also short distance but high capacity, and supports beam forming) becoming the most prevalent solution in the near future, low-power Wi-Fi dominating the telemetry market and Li-Fi starting slowly in niche areas (hospitals, people who don't like Wi-Fi beams and maybe then preschools and the like)
