Wondering if anyone can help me with the below need to know if this is even legal for them to do.

So I recently got an sms from standardbank personal loans where they deducted almost R2000 from my savings account for outstanding banking fees which I owed on a cheque account which I opened 5 years ago and never used.

SO this is the response I got from them

Cheque account number XXXXXXXXXXX in dispute was opened on the 01/03/2011.

ü On the 27/06/2011 a consultant from Collections Department contacted you to advise about and you advised you haven’t received the package and you advised you will go inside the branch to request same.

ü On the 28/08/2013 we debited your savings account with an amount of R1210.06 due to arrears on account.

ü We called again on the 24/10/2013 and you advised you will go to the branch to close the account as you no longer needed same.

ü Account was then handed over to attorneys on the 30/12/2014 and file was returned on the 09/02/2015 as you refused to pay.

ü Another debit was done on the 10/12/2015 for an amount of R1872.50 as account was still outstanding.

ü Account is now settled and request for closure has been sent.

Nothing you can do. Pefectly legal from my limited experience.

Onus is on you to close the account.

It's like subscribing for insurance, stating that you haven't made a claim and now you want allyour premiums back.

Nothing you can do....

Except move banks and tell SB to go fsck themselves.

They tried a similar thing with me many many years ago, and got a savings account into about R300 arrears. They refused to let me close the account until I had settled the balance. I laughed at the bank manager and said "That's fine, you can keep adding to it, I won't pay a cent and I don't bank with you guys anymore so you can't get any money from me anyway, you can leave it open or close it... makes no difference to me anymore, I was just doing you guys a favour really"... amazingly the account was closed the next day and the balance was zeroed.

Doesn't sound legal if they are debiting the funds without your authorization from a DIFFERENT account?

I think that you will find that when you sign up there is a provision in the small print to do this.

OP had plenty of time and warnings and only has himself to blame.
