Inbound Connections / Unrestricted APN (MTNVPN)

having the same bloody issue with mtn trying to monitor CCTV. does anyone know who to escalate this to? also on mtnvpn and still buggerall

What have you tried mariine1?

1555 is the first port of call.

I had a complex issue that 1555 or data coverage could not really help with me and kept on passing the buck so out of frustration I went to MTNs twitter and got an answer immediately.

But 1555 should be your first port of call.

I having the same problem. At home I have a B600 3G Router with MTN simcard in. When I try to access it from my laptop with a 3G card using an MTN sim, then it works perfectly, but as soon as I try to connect from another network, it fails.

I phone 1555 from MTN phone and asked for the "Unrestricted APN" service to be activated. They didn't know what I was talking about, so they sent me this document....

MTN calls it the 'mtnvpn' apn. Did you get something working since your post?

Ok, I finally got it working. These are the steps to follow if you are using an MTN simcard to get it going (apart from configuring your router):

1. Dial 808 from an MTN cellphone. Or 0831808 from a landline.
2. Ask the operator to activate the MTN-VPN service on your phone. They say that it takes about 24 hours.
3. Once the service is activated, configure your APN settings so that the APN name (which is usually 'internet' or 'myMTN') is changed to 'mtnvpn'.

That did the trick for me.

The confusing part was the term VPN as I know that to be something else, but this is just what they call the service. They have a special APN which they call 'mtnvpn' and they call the service MTN-VPN. (See bottom of this doc: https://dl.dropbox.com/u/14948927/Port_Forwarding_101.docx )

sadly I had someone on the forum do it for me :) but don't think he is still here

Hi there,

Can anyone shed more light on how to get this special APN activated on an MTN 3G account (with MWEB)?

I want to monitor an IP Camera at home, where I have no ADSL (no Telkom), hence the 3G account with MWEB (for having email services).

I tried contacting MTN, who refer me to MWEB, who in turn refer me back to MTN, claim not to know what I am talking about or want to sell me a corporate APN service.

All I need is to get a static IP address for my 3G connection so I can do port forwarding, but how?

You will need to use a dynamic dns setup, rather than a static IP.
The unrestricted apn is required from MTN because all traffic from the internet to the MTN ip assigned to your router is blocked by MTN.

Just call them up and ask them for the unrestricted APN from. Fill them out and submit them.

I called MTN and MWEB numerous times, with no luck.

I was hoping that someone here could help me with a direct contact at either MTN or MWEB to try and resolve this.

Very strange... I have successfully opened up the apn with MTN on a few simcards, directly from the helpdesk. Perhaps your issuie is that your line is with mweb and not direct with MTN.
Maybe someone else can add more info ...

I am battling with activating a MTN prepaid sim on the MTNVPN APN, and I have posted a complaint on hellopeter.com.
I have also logged a complaint with MTN directly, I think MTN need to resolve this so prepaid users can get access to a publicly routable IP address which is of use to your new aged internet users.
If anyone else agrees that MTN should allow this service to their prepaid users then please post and also comment on the hello peter complaint.

The strange thing is if you get a prepaid 8ta sim and force it to the MTN network you then get a publicly routable IP on the MTN network, makes no sense.

Are you sure you have a publicly routable MTN IP address, and not a publicly routable Telkom Mobile IP address when you are roaming?

MTN open vpn?

Is this still possible to get a open vpn simcard at all ?

I call them but they are clueless about it and their twitter just told me to call the call center

I believe you get a normal simcard, then you ask them to open ports on the simcard.

If that isn't what you want, please ignore.

I will try to call and ask them again :D

THREAD REVIVAL

Does anyone know how to get the mtnvpn working on a phone? I've read this whole thread and tried changing my apn settings on my phone and it did not work.

I do have the service activated on my sim card. It works if I put my sim in a modem and change the APN on the modem to MTNVPN. It just doesnt work on my phone for some reason. I called 808 and they were as helpful as nomral (clueless).

I use my phone as a hotspot for work and I cant carry the modem with me everywhere. My last resort will be to invest in a pocket LTE modem

Have you tried dialing 083 1555? They can see if there is a product issue, or even talk you through possibly just a setting that needs to be changed.
