so every morning i get this email report giving my useage on my 2 adsl accounts. This morning i got the following info...

Account1:

Uploaded: 2.76GB
Downloaded: 2.78GB
Combined Total: 5.55GB
Service threshold: 3.00GB

Account2:

Uploaded: 1.31GB
Downloaded: 2.00GB
Combined Total: 3.31GB
Service threshold: 3.00GB

So telkom is saying up yours buy a nother account! I havent used the 1st account nor have i really been using the other one!

Have you changed the username and password on your router?

If not, it's entirely possible someone logged into the router and used the default login to find out your account details, and then stole your bandwidth.

ah bloody hell - so i need to phone telscum and ask them to change my passwords?

Download and install SASA - it'll show you a detailed analysis of your bandwidth usage for your various accounts (including multiple concurrent connections made using your account). It's here:

You don't need to phone telscum to change your router password, check your router manual to find out how to do that. But if your router was set to the default passwords, getting your adsl account passwords changed would be a very good idea, yes.

well i just got one of the 1st telkom usb routers that they gave away with the ADSL many years ago

Hopefully you've still got the manual then with the router's IP address and default login details.

As an aside, I can hardly baa-leeve anybody could release a router that by default listens on public IPs and releases account info to anyone who asks. If you want that then you can enable it yourself, but gud damn don't make it the default!

The ADSL account password is what you need to change to get those hijackers off your account now. There's a password changing tool on the website somewhere but I didn't do anything when I tried it. Phone.

So i got this from telkom today...

Dear Henk Hugo,

Thank you for mailing Telkom Internet Abuse.

We have checked your logs from our side and it shows that your connection was used from different locations. If this was not authorized by you and require further investigation, you will need to report this to your local police station and obtain a case number. A subpoena will then need to be made out against us so we can issue you with the details of where the connections were made from.

In the interim we strongly suggest that you change your internet password.
Go to the ADSL Password Tool at http://www.telkomsa.net.

If you are using an ADSL router, we recommend that you also change that password.

Process to Obtain a Subpoena

Please note that the police will need to add the following information on the subpoena.

First of all, it is very important to make the Subpoena out against TelkomSA Ltd.

On the subpoena the following must be requested:

1. The telephone number associated with the ports identified.
2. The registered owner details of the telephone numbers identified.
3. The physical installation address of the telephone numbers
identified.

Please remember to add the username details.

Once the subpoena has been received by the investigating officer, the investigating officer has to hand the original subpoena to their Technical Support Unit (TSU). The officer at the TSU will know who the identified person in Telkom is to accept the subpoena.

Kind regards,

Telkom Internet Abuse

Good luck with that. My girlfriend phoned the police an said she just witnessed a smash-and-grab on the 14th Ave offramp on the N1. They asked her what a smash-and-grab was, they had no idea.

So good luck explaining to a cop you need an address of someone logging in with your DSL account details.

ShadowSA, if I wasn't living in SA, I wouldn't believe that story. Yet, the sad thing is I know thats true....

Another Story:

They broke into our neighbours house. We phoned the police while the robbers where still in the house but they never showed up. So we got in the car and followed the robbers. While following them we phoned the police and the "blits patrollie", they asked us if we were mad and to let them go immediatly.
