Increased Latency from Port Elizabeth ?

I've just got a quick question for any one from Port Elizabeth or maybe any one from Cape Town (I don't really know if it applies to CT)

Any one notice a increase in latency (roughly 20ms) from Friday ?

Yes I know 20ms is not much to write home about ;) I do play online games, 20ms is big difference especially for a 3G connection. My post is probably aimed at the gamers. Or any one who happens to have a old speedtest result lying around dated from before Friday :)

Some points I would like to make:
1. Tested my connection on three different towers still the same latency result
2. Tested it on another computer result the same
3. Tested on a laptop on the road etc

Now the most interesting point is my business DSL which uses Telkom Internet (Saix) is also showing a 20ms increase as well.
So I have a question for the more knowledgeable people on the forum.

If there is a problem with the Saix backbone in Port Elizabeth would it affect both the DSL(Saix Customers) and 8ta(Saix ?) equally :confused:

Seems to be all around the country? Wonder what Telkom are doing in the last two months...
 
I have noticed about 30-50ms increase from playing Medal of Honor. Servers I played on were +-220ms and are now 250-260ms. I'm on AH capped unshaped account with 10Mb line.

I thought services were supposed to improve with all the new cables that have landed?!?
 
I'm in East London, there has been a 30ms increase over the last couple days. I did a trace route to JHB and it seems the packets are going to CT then JHB, adding extra latency.

I have based this on the assumption that the packets previously went via a shorter route

Ah a Port Elizabeth trace route will basically be the same as a East London one, which will certainly explain my increase in latency then. Thanks for the confirmation Yaeger at least I know I'm not alone in this problem. Hopefully 8ta(Telkom) will sort it out soon.
 
I feel your pain! Living in PE, really sucks that our latency is so massive now :( Here's hoping they improve it quickly
 
I play Team Fortress 2. I play competitive, now that the ping is so much higher, basically have to learn how to aim again(projectiles + lag=fail)
 
i know the feeling. My signal has gone form -81dBM to -87dBm, and now it is -91dbm. My E1820 dongle is still in the same postion asit was 2 weeks ago. Playing BC2 is a little frustrating with all the LAAAAAAAAAAAG.
 
i got mine 2 days ago and my download and upload speeds are awesome but in black ops ALL the international servers have a lower ping than the south african servers. if telkom doesnt sort this out by the weekend im cancelling !!!
 
Are the Black Ops servers hosted by MWEB? Telkom does not peer with MWEB so essentially, your packet goes to london and back to get to MWEB. My ping to MWEB is 1000+

Yep they are hosted by Mweb :(

I was going to send a email today but I'm not sure if they will be interested in fixing it. It's one thing if your download/upload speed is drastically reduced but if your latency increases by 20ms.... 8ta will be = :rolleyes: or maybe even = :wtf:

Any way I'm going to give it a bash, I suppose there is no harm in trying :D

8ta have an office in PE with some very capable staff. They will task your query to the local Huawei techies in PE to investigate. Found this out yesterday with my own query!

My ping from my Telkom Do account is 67ms to MWEB...are telkom and mweb peering now? Can anyone confirm this?

I just loaded BFBC2 up and your right Yaeger, amazing!
Maybe Tsakie sorted some thing out :D

Now they just need to sort out the latency now, for us PE guys ;)
