Increased latency to EU servers

I have been getting a stable 160-175ms to EU servers for the last 3 years now. Recently my ping has increased to 190-220ms. I play a lot of FPS games and I find this increase in ping to make most of the games I play, unplayable. This issue does not seem to be going away as it has been over 4 weeks now. I ran a traceroute to Blizzards EU server to see if routing could be the issue.

I'm with Vox Telecom and noticed a 20ms jump through vox before going to the EU. I sent this through to my ISP and they assured me that, "the fibre link is currently testing as up and stable". I personally found this answer useless and unrelated to my request as I am having no issues with my fibre speed.

So I just wanted to know if this sudden increase in latency is caused by routing on my ISP's side or if it is caused by another issue.

Blizzard is using Google or some other cloud now as well. Not 100% sure. I also have 190+ where is used to get a solid 169ms on Afrihost (Wow) PTA

Happy to give you a test account - I gather from this traceroute that you are on Openserve? Drop me a PM.

So then this could be Blizzard related? I am also getting much higher ping in games like Apex and PUBG which aren't using Blizzard servers.

Are you in CT by any chance?

Well either way if you in CT or JHB

CT -> You being routed via JHB

JHB -> you being routed to CT via WACS instead of east coast cable

Latency starts at hops 4 or 5 ideally the ISP should go fibre network +-5ms then next hope should be the international hop so 140/150 type vibe for CT 165+- for JHB yours goes fibre network -> Ct/JHB -> International

I am in CT
Yea figured by hop 4 it has CPT in the name so your traffic is being routed via JHB.

CT to JHB is 18 to 20ms

From CT to London via east coast cable system is around 188 to 190 so spot on with what you getting so Vox are sending you that route instead of via the WACS cable that is in CT.

Ok so does that mean the hop of 20 ms before the international hop is normal because it's going through JHB. I just want to know if this is normal or is a problem with my ISP.

Alright so is that something that you can even get an ISP to change? Since they used to be routing me through the WACS from CT since I used to get 160-170.

Don't think it's blizzard related.. been overwatching the last two weeks daily and stable ping at 160ms..

So i am at work and we use RSAWEB you can see i am hitting the server at 149.2ms which is correct my home Cool Ideas connection will be the same. Vox are routing you very badly... This is a France or Amsterdam server if i recall so yes its ISP issue not a Blizzard one. They can change it yes but you going to need to get to a pretty high level of support your average 1st line or even second line support people will be like "restart your router" and then they might even hit you with the "your current ping is still acceptable"

When you use the Vox London server test server it uses their network as well (picked up in CT) and its netting me 173ms so its sending me a longer route

Alright thank you so much for the help. I'll try my best to get to higher levels of support by I don't have much faith since it's been two weeks and they still haven't replied to my follow up support email. I have been looking into switching ISP's. Would you recommend Cool Ideas, I've heard alot of good stuff about them.

I have been with them for 4+ years now and i am with Vumatel so granted my fibre network has been pretty problem free and had very few problems with them, and often they sorted them out pretty quickly.

I pay a little more but i have comfort knowing should i run into a weird problem that is out of the norm that they have people like @PBCool and some other members of the team around to skip tier 1 support and get straight to the core of the problem.

I don't even know my login for their support portal so that should say a bit...

I guess my ISP must have been listening because all of a sudden the issue is fixed lol. I assume this means they are using WACS again.

Your first international hop average is 210 and current ping was 180 which is high but the pings on the next few hops are 155s so looks like it maybe they had a capacity issue or a transit issue for a while. This did this same thing to my two friends on Vox during level 5 lockdown routed them up to JHB then said they didn't have capacity on WACS
