Increased line speed does not speed up overseas connections

On a 4Mb/s line I was getting 3.5Mb/s for both local and overseas sites.
Telkom upgraded it to a 10Mb/s line.
Now I get 7Mb/s for local sites but still only 3.5Mb/s on overseas sites.
Why?

Because 10Mb/s is just the dowload speed of the datalink between you and the exchange (and it is the best speed you can hope for at that.)

The throughput that you get from your computer to any given server via the internet is different and will depend on a number of factors at any given time. Connecting to a server physically further away, your data is more likely to take more hops to and from its destination or encounter some sort of bottleneck which affects the overall throughput.

Suspected as much. :)

Short version: the undersea cable (EASSy) which normally carries Afrihost's international traffic is currently down for repairs and testing. The alternative links in place aren't able to provide the same speeds. Once EASSy is back up - which might still take a fair few days (or weeks :erm: ) - you should see a marked improvement.
 
it all depends what u doing http 400 to 600 but with any downloads u can max your line picked this up with ipcop setup and net limiter.
 
EASSy fixed but situation unchanged.
ISP says on a 10 MB/s line 3-4 MB/s normal for overseas connections, can't expect better in SA.
What speeds are other people experiencing?
