Actually, I must say that I went into IC for the first time in ages to price their laptops and I was blown away at their laptop prices... they really looked pretty decent for a change. So maybe give it a squiz... you might be surprised.

Hopefully they are coming around to some more sane pricing levels... or maybe the chain is in serious trouble?

If you buy a 2009 HP laptop called Jg91(made up) from PC Int or IC which ever shop is cheaper is beta for that laptop, because they are the identical spec'd laptop same everything. Where as with desktops, there are endless combinations and brands. Some1 like IC use generic MB's RAM etc. Whereas PC int use quality brands that last.

Besides you dont buy pc hardware without research, so unless its broken(PC Int will replace) why would you need to return it?

Well let me see. Buy two monitors from different makers, eg HP and Samsung,
put them side by side and compare at home. I did that with an HP from IC and a Fujitsu-Siemens from Makro once. Buy a laptop, if it sucks in the first 7 days,
return it for full refund. Buy a video card, if it sucks - return it. Etc.

There are many reasons why one would want to do that.

Makro has a 14 day return policy.

There seems to be pros and cons about both :/

I like the idea of getting Packard Bell because I simply leave my office now, collect it, plug it in and everything works. There's the return policy, warranty, guarantee and support. It's a solid little machine (cool little box) that weighs twice that of made up PCs.

However, there's the added cost of the unit, I don't know what I'm getting ie brands or specs (no one can tell me how many slots the motherboard has - or what it is!). Also, I can't open the unit for any reason - and if I buy anything in future, I'll need IC to open it and void everything.

Bought a game at IC (first mistake), activation code didn't work, so I went back to them (second mistake). After confirming that it didn't work, they offered to crack it for me. So I did get service from them, but not what I expected.

I would report them to the BSA... and insists on getting an unactivated copy...

I can see your point, but as i said before do your research first, you'll probably find out more about a product from ppl who have been using it for a while. Thats not cool for the shop, but if they offer it thats their own fault.

That is on top of doing research. Besides your suggestion entails having a friend with the same configuration you're wanting and with evolving technology
and differing needs I don't think I'd find a friend with the same identical equipment as me.

Even buying a laptop you think will have enough juice for your workload,
after reading the reviews (IF these are even available) you can still
evaluate the machine under the right working conditions. If you think it
under performs of you don't like the fact that it has too few USB ports
or the power cord plugs in on the left and not right, you can return the
machine for full refund within 7 days. I doubt these cut-price wholesalers
will let you do that.

So why not try the laptop at IC, test it for 6 days decide if its wat you want, take it back, get it from a "cut-price wholesaler" and save yourself money.

I neva said anything about the return policy of IC being bad, there prices and quality of goods aren't up there.

Well if you are buying a Packard Bell your usually not very knowledgeable to be asking a lot of questions. Packard Bell makes complete systems for Noobs.

PB used to be the own brand for Dixons UK. They got into trouble because customers didn't like it (always getting returned). They closed their entire chain of high street stores and became an online-only dealer. I hear PB have improved a bit since then.

Anyone - also noticed the PC on the right for R8999.00 - Core 2 Quad 2.4, 3GB RAM, 500GB HDD, nVidia 8400GS etc etc Surely that's better value than the one I pointed out yesterday - more value for money?

Well, I've never bought a pc from them because I always felt it was overpriced, but for older people and those who couldn't care less about pc's, it makes a good idea to buy from them. The guarantee and option to walk in and so on is very comforting for some people.

I've bought games from them in the past without issue, as well as odds and ends over the years, with no issues.
