"Independence Day 2" is happening. Twentieth Century Fox announced on Thursday that the blockbuster sequel will arrive in theaters on July 3, 2015, 19 years after the first film's official release.

"We resisted doing the sequel for years because we still wanted to honor the first one. The first one gave us all careers and we really love that movie and loved the experience," original "Independence Day" co-screenwriter Dean Devlin said in an interview with THR last year. "I feel like we got it. I think it took a long time, but I feel like we finally got something that really feels like, 'That’s worth seeing as a sequel to 'Independence Day.'"

Whether that sequel includes Will Smith is unclear; the "After Earth" star hasn't committed to the project just yet. "The Will Smith part of it may be ongoing but I think there's strategies for both," original co-star Bill Pullman said in an interview with Crave Online earlier this year. "I like what I have to do in both of them. I'm not in an old age home in a wheelchair being wheeled out for one more moment. It’s a very interesting conception of what happens to [my character] between then and when it picks back up."

Roland Emmerich will return to direct "Independence Day 2"; the 57-year-old filmmaker is currently making press rounds for "White House Down," meaning interested parties can expect even more "ID4 2" updates in the coming week.

As for the July 3, 2015 release date, "Independence Day 2" joins a conga line of massive blockbusters on that summer's calendar, including "Marvel's The Avengers 2," "Pirates of the Caribbean 5," "Jurassic Park 4" and, perhaps, "Star Wars: Episode VII."

Is it that long since Independence Day was made. It was a truly epic movie in its time.

Will Pablo Francisco be in this one? All the action... "Aliens are coming, get down!" More if the action... "Alien's are coming back, get down again!"

I think they didn't make a sequel cause the first didn't lend itself well to a sequel, the dude is lying.

They just need good writers. With all those big ships crashing but no exploding waiting to be examined after 15 years the humans would have been able to learn from the tech and would be ready to space travel themselves. Not just they're just waiting for the next invasion again using some software hacker and gung-ho pilot to save them .

I watched the first one the other day for the first time...wasn't great..but I am like 17 years late I guess....so I couldn't have expected better graphics....

The film was epic on the time as the previous films preceding it all had like just glimpses of aliens and relied on suspense. Independence Day was a trend setter as it was one of the first that was all action packed with plenty of CGI and aliens.

A prequel might work though, a sequel I gots my doubts would take lots of work and money to pull off and if they can't be 20mil for a star it doesn't bode well on the budget.

Independence Day was AWESOME!... 'cept for that "upload a virus to the alien main frame" part. That sucks balls. But the rest is awesome :)

maybe we'll get a decent storyline this time and not another America saves the world piece of crap

and pigs may grow wings and fly

As long as they don't cast any of Will Smiths kids in the movie it will be great.
