Indian kids ousource homework assignments

School children in the Indian capital New Delhi are hiring "holiday homework providers" to do their assignments while they take it easy during the summer break, a report said Friday. Teachers may be appalled at the new form of outsourcing but many such "experts" are in the market to help kids who despise holiday homework, the Hindustan Times daily reported. "Leave Holiday Homework Worries. Get Holiday Homework for all classes done by Experts," the report cited an ad on OLX, an advertising portal, as saying. The providers do projects, write articles or poems, prepare PowerPoint presentations and design working models for competitive prices. Abhishek Sharma, who says he does "good quality holidays homework," gets up to 25 orders every summer. Sharma, a pupil in the final year at school, charges 1,000 rupees (17 dollars) for simple projects and up to 3,000 rupees for complicated ones. Some homework providers talk about the pressures in the niche business."There is too much competition. I am thinking of giving up. Since many students call with their parents not knowing about it, they can't afford the service," said Deepika Verma, who runs a coaching institute. Another homework supplier, Leher Raj, blames schools for burdening kids with difficult assignments that force them to outsource their work. "The kind of work schools give for holidays is actually meant for parents to do," she said. Schools are trying to keep pace with the crafty students. "We make students write a journal about the holidays. Any project not made by the student is not assessed at all and the students know this," said Ameeta Mulla Wattal, principal of Delhi-based Springdales School.

I think the point that comes out clearly is kids these days are overworked.
I have friends whose son is grade 6. The school, like many others, is trying to compete with other schools, especially Maragon, to be accepted into the "cooler-as-ekke" club.
The child gets given so much homework, he can't even have a decent weekend at home, and on top of this they expect him to participate in sports for a whole day on Saturday.

Nothing like that happened back in my day...

Honestly kids are lazy, but we all are, we don't remember things anymore, we just google it.
When is the last time you worked out a waiters 25% tip in your head? we have smartphones do all the work for us.

the problem is not with the amount of work kids are getting, its with the quality of it. sure Koosi is right there are kids who are spending the entire weekend doing projects and homework, but when you go look at what it is they did you will be even more appalled, grade 9 science project is a collage. kid spends 10 hours finding pictures and cutting and pasting them into the right places. ask them what the project is about and then to explain what they have learned. go ahead. do it.

the OBE system that is in schools at the moment (yes it's being phased out...) has ruined the children's ability to think for themselves. we are not teaching teachers how to use reason, how will this flow down to the students?

Nonsense. It's called progress. Why search for hours in a library and still not find the right information when you can "Google" and get tons of relevant information with pro, cons and perceptions of many instead of one or few persons? Explain as I missed something here? The rest I agree with. Kader Asmal may claim to be the father and brainchild of this failed education system. The current regime changes everything at a whim, without proper analysis and long term effects. Every 5 Years another buffon brings another good "Idea" to parliament and it gets signed into law. It just began again.

Yes it is called plagiarism and it can result in having academic degrees revoked and being dismissed disgracefully from a public university.

The matter of revoking a degree is somewhat legally complex and has recently attracted judgment:

In the particular case the court held that the Senate of UKZN was wrong to revoke a PhD and there is obiter to suggest that the revocation would have to be done by a court. In my view there is a statutory gap and it would be best for degree revocation to be a matter handled by a judge appointed as a special Vice-Chancellor

OBE is the future. They just messed up the implementation. It needs to involve a lot more trial and error - the only way to become educated.
