Because so many female Indian babies are killed at birth, villages that run out of women are “addressing” this issue by sharing 1 woman between a group of men.
There may be a few people out there who might think at first that wife-sharing is a good idea. It’s kind of kinky, right? And besides, I know a few men who’d be happy to share the burden of their wives with their buddies or brothers. Never mind the women who wouldn’t mind getting cosy with said brothers or friends.
The grim reality, of course, couldn’t be more different.
You can imagine: In a culture where women are seen as so inferior to men that female babies are aborted or killed at birth by the thousands, women obviously have very little say in these arrangements. This type of culture treats women like cattle. And these unfortunate female slaves (which is, in essence, what they are) now have to weather the abuse from not just 1 man, but sometimes 3 or 4 who have no qualms in treating their "wives" like ****.
"My husband and his parents said I had to share myself with his brothers," said Munni, a woman in her mid-40s, dressed in a yellow sari, sitting in a village community center in Baghpat district in the northern state of Uttar Pradesh.
"They took me whenever they wanted -- day or night. When I resisted, they beat me with anything at hand. Sometimes they threw me out and made me sleep outside or they poured kerosene over me and burned me."
The miserable irony is that this horrific treatment of women would never have happened if the culture wasn’t so misogynistic in the first place. If you’re going to kill girl babies then you should realise that sooner or later you’re going to run out of women to bear your sons.
So why kill the girl babies?
Daughters are seen as a liability because
a) they have to be kept chaste for marriage lest they bring shame on the family and
b) the parents have to pay crippling dowries for good matches.
So yes, because of this patriarchal bull****, baby girls are undesirable (and often named “Unwanted”) and killed. This leads to a skewed male-to-female ratio and leads to so many social ills like, wife sharing for example.
"The real solution is to empower girls and women in every way possible," says Neelam Singh, head of Vatsalya, an Indian NGO working on children's and women's issues.
"We need to provide them with access to education, healthcare and opportunities which will help them make decisions for themselves and stand up to those who seek to abuse or exploit them."
