I'm looking the best indoor wireless AP for my house, at an affordable rate...

I have installed a LAN cable from my router to my roof, which I'm hoping will power and run my wireless AP. I've thought of using Ubiquiti's UniFi AP / AP Pro (Scroll to bottom of page for comparisons).

Unfortunately, while checking out prices, the UAP-AC seems to be quite out my budget - however, a look at the prices of other models seems to suit me well.

Am I on the right track here? Ubiquiti seems to have a long an impressive track record.

The UAP is quite good imo,it's slightly more effort to configure initially because it doesn't use a standard web interface to configure - you use a Dashboard running on a PC
It comes with a PoE injector to send power through the LAN connection so at least the power issue is sorted

Makes sense that it needs an injector...

My plan, however, is to have a switch in the roof, so I can run a cable from there down to my PC (And in the future into 4 of the other rooms), then one to the AP.
This leads me to believe I will have to have a power source in my roof :/

I don't know any other way around it.

With the Ubiquiti AP, I see a lot of different types on this link - is there anything specific I should be looking for?

I would rather opt for the slightly slower 2.4GHZ Unifi than opt for something else.

That's how much I trust them.

Could get a PoE capable switch too

Not really, get whichever of the units fits your budget, even the cheaper of the ceiling APs is quite good

If you are putting a switch in your roof and running cabling everywhere why bother with a fancy wireless AP at all?

Just get a cheap one and put it in the same place as the switch.

AP's inside the ceiling work much much better than in any room as they bypass all the walls.

If it wasn't so much effort to put a plug point in my ceiling I would have just put my router there in the first place.

Would it be a good idea to just get a range extended with a few gigabit ports?

Also, my thoughts went to the UniFi unit because it promises to seamlessly integrate with my current WiFi - I don't want to walk into different rooms and have to change my wifi settings.

I was searching for a PoE switch - all I found was switches that had PoE ports :?
Could you maybe give me an example?

Picostation - have mine outdoors for 3 years still going strong. But why on ur roof?. Best to put ceiling height unless u turn the antenna down

Been a while since i've looked,I remember 3com offered an Intellijack switch that could "forward" PoE - so it would be similar to that
Other manufacturers called it some kind of "Green" tech

Those ubiquiti indoor roof mounted AP's then but it is a small task to configure. For my double story 3 bed house had to cover I Just installed Pico outside level of 2 floors and covered entire apartment very nicely

Unfortunately mounting anything outside isn't an option

The rats are going to have a nice snack...

There is pretty much > 1 rat(s) in my roof.

All the alarm cables, plastic piping, and other miscellaneous stuff lie in my roof - most not shielded by a pipe. I haven't had any issues... yet...

You need to buy them here and claim your MyBB discount :)

I wanted to buy my items today ;)

I was hoping for a switch / wireless combo (NOT a router - up to 6 port) that I could integrate... Otherwise I'd need to buy a switch separately with the AP. A quick browse through that link finds me either or, not the combo.

These are great btw, I slapped 2 in my place and it's covered perfectly. Even turned the wifi part of my router off.

Switches are real cheap and they help to rationalise the wiring in some cases.
