Induction cookers

I use mine daily - very useful for jamming energy into something fast - somewhat like a microwave except stove top format.

Also...takes a bit of time to get used to it...doesn't behave the same as a standard stove top.

Not necessary. Its got a couple of millimeters range. Never took off my watch & used a bunch of metal cooking implements near it. "Don't be an idiot" seems to cover it safety-wise.

On balance I'd rank an electronic pressure cooker higher on the "must have" list though.

Strangely, I rank my Tefal pressure cooker together with my induction cooker as extremely high on "must have" list !
They both work wonders when used together.

Be more specific... What took getting used to?
A high powered electric stove plate (defy red dot) is 1.5kw...a decent portion of which dissipates into the air and it gradually heats up.

A low end induction one is 2kw...and all of that energy hits the pan immediately with minimal loss. The high end ones are 8kw+...which will pretty much charcoal your food instantly.

Think of it this way...you're used to a car that accelerates from 0-120kmh gradually. Now you're given a car that is instantly at 120kmh once you touch the peddle. That'll take some getting used to and will probably involve some mishaps. Thats being a little dramatic sure but you get my point...

Oh and some of the non-stick pans can't take that much localized heat....I damaged one of my woks because I wasn't paying attention for a bit.

We use two! Very seldom use the electric hob any more. The higher settings need to be watched as food will burn onto the bottom of the pot very quickly. I have warped a frying pan using too high a setting!

I have one and to be honest I rarely use it. I basically use it to boil pasta or rice. Stuff like fried eggs are impossible in my experience because they end up burning at the bottom within seconds while not being cooked on top.

I used to do the same - rice / pasta or to boil something on my single plate cooker. I then moved into a house that has an induction stove (and yes I have bought new pots and pans...) And I was forced to learn how to cook with it. I love my stove LOL

I am looking for the defy 4 plate hubs but man, over 5k for one :(

How do you get around doing things like frying eggs? I tried even on very low settings and the eggs just burn onto the pan almost immediately. I bought a proper stainless steel frying pan to go with it too.

I set mine to a low when frying eggs/scramble eggs, also use a non stick frying pan. I alsi add a small amount of coconut oil (more a health).

Other than that I use mine everyday. Excellent for stir fry in a wok, 10min, from frozen to cooked.

Yeah those are tricky, but definitely doable. You need to turn down the heat quite a bit...like 500W. And use a non-stick pan - eggs don't work well on the stainless steel ones even if its a high quality one.

The only pot that works on mine is my amc pot. My other stainless steel pots and Bauer pan don't work

Just spray Spray 'n Cook before putting your butter in. Worked for me before I got a little non stick pan specially for just my eggs. I have never cooked on a this mythical induction technology you guys are talking about, but should work the same.

Well - My stove top is Bosch, and the settings are 1-9 and a b (which is what i use to get water boiling). And I started collecting Le Creuset non-stick pans and pots (20% off at the home expos helps)...

I think i cook eggs on the setting of 6.5 - 7 and i put the eggs in the pan while it is heating up and the butter is starting to melt. I've never used spray and cook with these pans either. And i've been in this house for about 6months now, and I don't recall having too much trouble not burning eggs.

And I'm by no means a chef... so if I can do this... I'm sure everyone can.

My advice would be - start with the temp as low as possible... and try cooking eggs and ease the temp up.

I truly love this stove cos I can start cooking as soon as I get to the kitchen. There is no time wasted waiting for it to heat up. Its great! And I think its relatively save with my kids (oldest is almost 3)

NECRO!

Can I use a normal extension cord with a single plate induction cooker?

Can I use a normal extension cord with a single plate induction cooker?

Definitely can.

We started taking our single induction plate along when camping and we use our thin little 1.5mm extension without any problems. Only some camp lights running it otherwise.

I do.

Standard max amperage on a plug top is 16A @ 230V, at a power factor of 1 gives you well over 3500w of power.

Most single plate induction cookers are 2000w models, so you are well below the limit. Most vacuum cleaners are around the 2kW mark as well, for reference, so as long as you don't plug it into a multiplug with a million other appliances you should be good to go.

All I can say is whilst on this topic got an AEG induction hob... I will never ever look back... This has been an absolute pleasure! It has 14 settings including BOOOST and boy does that BOOOOST

On holiday we had a normal stove top and I almost fell over with the time it took. Induction is honestly the future!

I have never burnt anything with it eggs are a breeze my only problem with them is the dif between runny and stiff yoke. No other issues.

Excellent, thank you.

Great, thanks.

It's a 2000w so I'm going to fry pork chops in a pan outside. Sick and tired of cleaning the entire kitchen after cooking a few chops and I don't want a braai.

.............................thinking of you faniebraai :crying:
