What effects do electric fences have on ADSL lines if within, say, 1 to 2 metres?

Coincidently, my ADSL line became very noisy (loud buzzing) today, and I noticed that an electric fence installation had been been completed today.

Is this coincidence?

Solution & Carollary

Rubber suit and cutters if all else fails.

You must see the mess Telkom has left since yesterday.

One of Telkom's intelligensia was working on the phone connections for the property concerned, 45 Conrad Drive, Blairgowrie, (I hope you are a member of myadsl).

He left the steel protective box covering the connections on the pole off.
The connections are now open to the weather and the very aggressive creepers on the pole.

It took me 5 calls and 5 visits from the Intelligensia to get the connections covered and creeper free a while ago, but only after my phones had stopped working.

This is quite likely to happen again.

My problem is either the electric fence which was completed today, or crap work by Telkom technicians.

It is unfortunate that there could be a problem other than that which may have been created by an incompetent Telkomite. This could be emphasised and passed off as a permanent excuse for my noisy line and crappy ADSL.

I also had issues with my electric fence interfering with my ADSL line. The telkom techie had equipment that showed the number of line errors. With the fence on it sky rocketed even though normal internet usage such as web browsing and downloads seemed to worked fine. With the fence off the line errors disappeared. It seems it has something to do with your houses earthing vs the fences earthing. It doesn't really make sense to me as telkoms wiring is completely independent to my eskom wiring other than the fact that the adsl modem gets it power from the eskom wiring. So I guess in effect they are connected, though not directly.

My main reason for complaining was disconnects from the SGS Battlefield servers. As it turns out it seems the BF server software is just plain buggy. So the fence may have caused some disconnects but most of it was buggy server software.

So, in a nutshell, electric fences do interfere with ADSL but it doesn't seem to make much of a difference. Note I have a 384 Kbps adsl connection. At higher speeds it may be much more of an issue ...

My fence and the telkom junction (those concrete pillars) are within a half a meter from each other (horizontally).

Hmm... My electric fence runs right near our pole, however the cable crosses the boundary at quite a height above the fence. Can't say I've got any issues. My line is 100% stable.

Is it possible the fencing is causing spikes on the mains? Some kind of filter or ferite coil may help
Can try attach the coil to all leads going to the adsl modem (mains, phone and lan/usb)

Induction not a problem.

A real expert technician working for Telkom had sorted out my circuit before 08:00 this morning. He rectified what the incompetent technician did yesterday.

I am surprised at Telkom's response to my one call made to 0800375375.

The manager did phone me back within the hour.
A consultant in cape Town phoned me shortly afterwards and said that a technician would fix the problem ASAP. He did, and now my ADSL is once again working perfectly.

However, I still shudder at the thought of the average technician working anywhere near my circuit.
:) :)
