Hello. We have a serious bug problem with which we need help.

Live in a ground floor flat close to CT CBD. It is rented.

We used to have normal, full-size cockroaches. To combat them we used Baygon coils - the kind that you light, then they emit smoke, and you evacuate for 2 hours. That worked a treat and got rid of ALL the big cockroaches.

BUT, they have been replaced, with smaller versions of cockroaches, and there are many more of them. They vary in size, but never exceed about half the size of a flash disk - so maybe 25mm or so and look exactly like cockroaches.

We are at out wits end as to what to do to get rid of them - they are immune to the Baygon coils, as well as the same thing but in tablet form, that you also light.

I have tried putting down that cockroach gel that they are meant to eat and take back to their nests but that has done nothing.

I have tried just emptying 2 full cans of Doom/Raid/Target into the kitchen around all the crevasses and that slows them down for like a day.

Any ideas as to what we can do? Bearing in mind:

We do not own the property so very invasive methods are out
We have tried a lot of things, already mentioned
We have a cat, so evacuating is always unpleasant, especially in winter and we cannot douse the place in poison.

Help!

:(

Small cockroaches means they are breading either in your flat or nearby and this means they are near to a source of water so you need to sort out any water leaks.

that sounds disgusting man.

how about buying a few of those big spiders to take care of the roach problem, and then using the baygon thingies on the spiders?

Interesting...

Our taps do drip a little but we had that seen to a few months back, and they are still here.

But I mean the sink and drains are surely all going to be a water source for them? :(

// curls up and dies!!!:sick:

I would just move. Or fumigate, or leave or something. Get the city heath guys to do something!!!

sounds rather uhm..disgusting...And sadly all you can do is move then, doesnt help you fumigate or do whatever but your neighbours dont...kind of feel sorry for you though, had the same with a flat I stayed in as a student

If you're renting, make it the landlords problem?

Sorry, I should have mentioned. Due to some arrear rental which the landlord is not making a fuss about, very kindly, we are in no position to demand anything.

Also, when we told them about it, they said they knew it was a problem and just suggested more Doom.

There are six flats in our block and all have the same problem...

Keep everything clean, as soon as you use a pot or pan wash it, wipe your counters and floor's with white vinegar and flush all drains with vinegar and boiling water.(they hate the smell of it)
Make sure you're rubbish bin is sealed.

Unfortunately, moving is not an option for at least a year...financial constraints and such...

These sound like solid suggestions. We have taken to sealing all our open food in tuppaware containers...

White vinegar you say? Had not heard that before...Will give it a shot.

My father made a very successful cockroach powder that he used in an old flat they used to live in. It's also the type that you spread out throughout the place, in the back of cupboards and behind them etc.

It took a little while for them to die out, but after a while there were no more cockroaches and none seen for atleast 2 years. PM me and I might be able to help out. I believe he still has a bit of the powder lying around.

Also, they are attracted to heat so they like electrical circuit boards and our appliances like the dishwasher and washing machine and microwave  :(

YGPM :)

Egg casings survive fumigation. So fumigate for the existing ones and leave poison bait stations for the next generation. Don't leave any food lying around for them to eat, that includes wiping up crumbs and spills. The more there is to eat, the faster they breed.

The thing with the bait stations is that they are for full-size cockroaches. Like the gel I tried, I worry that these smaller mutant ones I have will not be interested in cockroach-targeting methods.

Won't help if you sort out your problem and the rest of the flats don't.

The aim is to make his flat as unpleasant an experience as possible for the roaches, they will then move someplace else where they are more comfortable.

Vinegar does that.

Well they are as fed up with it as I am - So if I could find some solution/suggestions as to how to treat it then I can share it with them. ATM they are also just doing regular foggings, which only work for a very short time.
