The fallacy that WW is more expensive than Checkers or PnP by a huge margin is not true anymore. As to the blatant lie that foodstuff hasn't gone up in 6 months ...... ja, no comment rather
 
I buy small items at Checkers to make up the bigger part of my meal.
FutureLife for Breakfast and lunch.
Salad to go with main meal (will be making a garden soon).
Main meal consists of a whole lamb that I buy for R80/kilo.

The beef price is due to the current disease where farmers had to kill a lot of their cows, so that price is going up quite a bit over the next 6 months.

You can't really use fresh produce as a stable baseline because the season's change, there are droughts, floods pests etc... A couple of years ago a 7kg pocket of potatoes was R89 due to a drought which happened to coincide with the nene gate scandal.

That being said, I can say that I have noticed a big difference between last year and this year in general.
As an example Toilet paper, was buying a 10 pack for R43 beginning of last year they then changed to only making an 8 pack for R37.

There is definitely "shrinkflation" happening. So it might cost the same but you're getting that much less.

It does help to explain the fall in CPI to 4% in Jan 2019. The reasons for and possible temporary nature of a price decrease is irrelevant when it comes to the calculation of yoy CPI.

I'd be genuinely interested to see a list of groceries which have only gone up 4% in price since this time last year.
