I called Telkom on Monday to upgrade from DSL384 to DSL512. Purely for the fact that 128k upload speeds are pathetic.

While chatting to the guy on the phone I asked him when the trial for the 4mbit ends, and he says end of Feb. He also mentioned the 4mbit will stay at the current price (after the trial) but then I asked him what else will there be to bridge the gap between the 512 and 4mbit. He didn't really know. He also mentioned price "changes" come March when all this is reevaluated. I recon the 384 will be the 512 (still for R245), the 512 will become the 1mbit option without a price change.

Anyway the line got upgraded in under 24 hours, they says it takes a minimum of 72 hours and a maximum of 7 working days.

72 hours = 9 working days :)

As for the speculation around the bumping up of line speeds at the same price, it would be logical that Neotel would release something cheaper and faster in April than what Telkom offers, so a March timeframe for Telkom to make some changes could see them thwart Neotel's go to market plans...

At least this is competitive behaviour, finally... we may see better value out of Telkom after all...

Hmm, this should be interesting.

On one hand Telkom upgrading the DSL512 users to 1mb lines may cause issues and more complaints (due to their inability to actually provide that speed in many cases and the fact that some exchanges don't even support anything above 512, like mine)

On the other hand they could just drop their monthly line rental for current DSL512 lines to what DSL384 users pay at the moment (and do away with 384 completely), but what is the likelyhood of Telkom actually giving a discount to the users that most likely make up the majority of their connections?

They did it before with 192 to 384, they might try and improve offerings with Neotel on the horizon. People with a higher speed also tend to use up more cap so they make more money there.

I would like to be optimistic and think Telkom will do something positive this March. I was hoping someone here had spoken to some Telkom employee and has some inside info.

Upgrading 384 to 512 without affecting the price would be pretty good IMO. 384 upload speeds are ridiculous.

do you guys think that telkom might bump up 384 users to 512 and 512 to 1mb users come March or August ? If so, then that would be schweet :)
