Hello all

Which car(s) fall into the following parameters?

Mileage: 0-140,000.00
Fuel economy: a minimum of 14 km / liter or 7.15l / 100 km (mixed driving) - I drive about 65% open road, 35% traffic flowing at 30km/hour
Price: R 70 000 of which around R 32 000.00 will be deposit in cash.
Must have air-con.
Age: No more than 13 years old. But the condition etc etc is more important.
Area: Anywhere. I live in Durbanville but I know that mostly cars are cheaper in Gauteng and I go there a couple of times a year so one more visit wont kill me.

I am not brand loyal so any brand that will tick those boxes is a contender.

Regarding the bold bit, town driving? Bumper to bumper traffic? Highway? Combined cycle?

By the looks of it.

Chevy Spark
Toyota Yaris
Suzuki Alto
Daihatsu Sirion
Fiat Bravo
Hyundai Getz
Renault Sandero

list goes on and on.

In my opinion, rather look at getting a bike. If you're dead set against it no worries, but you can get a Honda NC700X/750X for between R50k to R70k and that thing sips fuel. It's common to see figures of 30 km/l. The bike uses half of a Honda Jazz 1.4i engine and has a 12000 km service interval. You then get the best air con you can get. ;)

Have a look at the Honda Jazz, I'm sure there are some in your price range that will tick all the boxes. Safe too, which is a huge plus.

Also consider a Toyota Yaris or Dihatsu Sirion (same car really). Boring and predictably reliable, but I assume that's a bonus. I think you might find A Ford Figo or two around there.

That being said, as many plus sides as there are to small town hatchbacks, if you're going to spend a fair amount of time on the open road I would suggest going for a larger Sedan. Heck if you're lucky you can get an 8th gen Honda Civic 1.8 EXI manual that ticks all of the requirements, even the fuel efficiency (I let my old car go for a fair bit less than your budget, ticked all the boxes apart from mileage at 150,000kms but it was in great condition).

Thanks for the advice. I do not care for more power as I drive to work very calmly and we have another car that we will use when going on holiday or when we need a bit more power.

Ps I drive 60km / day (30 to work / 30 back) and that makes up the most of the traveling done.

Why no more than 13 years? Isn't 13 years itself very old?

It is. I just think I needed to draw the line somewhere.

It's not so much more power for power's sake, as it is for ease of commuting as well as less wear and tear on the engine. I used to commute 100kms a day to work and back, and at times had to use a small 1.3 that felt very laboured on the highways compared to my regular car (Audi A3).

Plus the Sedan should in theory be a safer option in the event of any accidents (larger car, more airbags etc.).

I am strong like bull :p

I am looking for a car that has aircon and that I can afford as well as being fuel efficient, I am not to worried about the rest.

I am looking at the Honda Jazz and even the Polo comfortline 1.4 (no idea what the fuel efficiency are in those).

Fair enough. What are you currently using for the daily commute?

The only issue with Polos is their high hijack risk (and the associated insurance payments). In terms of fuel economy they'll give you over 14km/l if your route and driving style are as you say they are.

Currently I am using a 2003 Corsa Utility 1.4i. I live in Cape Town so I am not to worried about the hi jacking :)

I have seen some Polos for around 60k, with less than 130k km on the meter.

Ps how expensive is the smart car (the sportier version) on upkeep?

Ok so I think I wil get one of those Polo comfortlines.

How are the older shape ford fiestas when it comes to fuel efficiency?

The 1.4l should give you 13 to 14km/l if decently maintained.

I agree, I have one of those, 2006/7 model I think. I get an average of around 12km/l. but that’s me not always driving economically:D
