Good day
Does anyone have suggestions for an effective insecticide for termites that is safe with kids and pets around. The longest I can keep the kids and pets away effectively is 8 hours

Indoor or outdoor termites? indoor termites are white and small, outdoor ones are red/yellow.

Termites is a pretty broad topic some more info will help especially the location.

I have only ever seen them outdoors, but recall that they were more white. I will have to confirm at home

You have to know which ones you have

Rather get a professional. I paid R1600 for spraying my entire garden with good chemicals.
With my house being located next to a green belt (i.e. jungle) it will not be a situation where I can eliminate them. They will have to be continuously controlled. I would rather find the correct way to do it myself so that it can be periodically "maintained".

If you can drill under your house and inject poison then you'll be able to DIY.

They used a pressure washer type of hose fitting to inject it into the soil every 2 feet and then soaked the entire area on top as well.

Recently got quotes for a small 2 bedroom, both around R3700, one was spraying, other inculduing drilling

Eish. The guys have moved in to my garden... We noticed mud tunnels up the trunk of a large tree, and closer inspection confirmed the presence of the squatters. Fortunately they're not in the house, but unfortunately they do need to be removed. Is there a DIY option, or am I at the mercy of an exterminator?

Or big black ants (Carpenter ants).

If indoor, you might be creeping to an expensive problem if not dealt with immediately. We had to get a 1910s house with wooden floors get covered and fumigated, many thousands later and most of the floors replaced, just for not catching it early enough

Exterminator, they'll need to treat around the property as well. It does last about 5 years

The Outdoor ones are harmless. Healthy for your garden in fact.
