Inside Hetzner’s data centre

So if you host in this DC and it goes down what happens? Do they not have multi AZ like AWS?

Nice. Would love to do a site visit and see how it compares with MTN, Vodacom, MWeb and RSAWeb's; was pretty impressed with those.

Having been to Mweb's and another place's DC, Hetzner's one looks pretty pimped up.

Nice. I must say, I love Hetzner. I've been a customer for many years and the customer service from them is just absolutely over the moon amazing. I really hope that does not go down now that they are getting so big.

Sheesh it looks good, especially after my time in a few of our bigger financial institutions' data centres - some of them are not pretty.

Yep. Would you believe I had to day my own LAN cable at the last bank I worked at... This involved lifting floor boards and pulling it across the office to the lab.

Besides putting a new layer of paint on the building, are there any sort of data center type accreditation the new site has?

Or is it typical SA smoke and mirrors where it looks pretty but doesn't do anything.

That building looks so badly designed, looks like a standard warehouse. Meh. Looks cheap.

Sheesh, surprised you weren't beaten with the ITIL handbook by some mid level manager who didn't know the difference between fibre and copper cabling..

As far as I understand it is per the German standard, my worry was more around the cooling - Germany doesn't get as hot as here, so I thought the thermodynamics might be out.

I think they are going with the term "cost effective" - they are actually borrowing from standard warehouse design (building and roof shape) for the passive cooling. As long as the walls are properly secure adding more structure is fairly pointless unless you are trying to make a bunker that can handle aerial attack. I would like to see some better protection around the perimeter to stop a rogue truck barrelling through, but that is not too clear in the images, so may be in place.
