install xp on notebook with no cdrom and stiffy?

HEY

i am currently faced with the following problem
i have a HP nc4010 a couple of days ago the hdd crashed

I got a new hdd
now the problem is the laptop has a docking station which has
the cdrom and stiffy but the laptop has nothing when i boot it doesnt
pick up the docking station the cdrom or stiffy

now i was thinking i have a external hdd bracket maybe i could take out
the hdd of the laptop plug it into my pc copy a couple of files over and
shot it will pick up the docking station or even better winxp
will be installed

any other ideas how i can get it working or
if u can help me with my idea
ill appreciate it very much

U can get a External DVDrom / DVD-writer wich plugs in via USB port
 
unless u know what your doing, its gonna be a mission to do it tho.

u could get a 2.5" external USB bracket from JavaCafe/Vivacafe for around R65, then plug your Laptop's 2.5" hard-drive in the USB thingie. Then u can plug it into your home pc, and copy the windows install files to the laptops drive. But if the hard-disk isn't bootable, then it won't help u alot.

U'll need knowledge of using DOS, basically your home pc will need a stiffy drive(and boot disk of sorts) then u can bootup, make the USB drive bootable via dos. with the SYS command (if its on the boot disk/stiffy). Then u can restart the pc, go into XP copy over the XP installation files onto the HDD, and pop the hdd back into your laptop.

The laptop will then bootup into dos, then u can go into the XP install directory and install it :>
 
Haven't tried this in a long time, but format the drive and make it bootable (IE: dos). Copy the I386 folder across, run the setup (winnt.exe I think). If you have a NIC that's on the notebook, consider something like RIS (needs Server 2k / 2k3) which is only a pain sometimes with NIC/SCSI drivers (prob won't apply though)
 
Make yourself a bootable USB Stick, with WinPE, or Bart's PE on it!! Then u can install via a network share, or even directly from the USB device, depending on its capacity.. I carry a dual boot linux / vista-pe 4gb usb stick with me at all times for this kind of purpose
 
ya the usb stick sound like a good idea but there is no option in the bios to boot from usb :(

cause guess what i just opened my hdd bracket and took the hdd
and was like where is the plug to interface with the connect between the bracket and hdd then i realised i had a sata ext bracket with a ide hdd

ook darem ma lekker dom

The NC4010 should pick up a USB Bootable Device, and boot from it anyway - there does not need to be a specific "Boot from USB" option enabled... but you may have to go into your boot order or hard disk order options and juggle those... Alternatively, just press F8 or F10 (I think) during POST, and it will bring up the boot menu....
 
Not exactly sure how to create a bootable mem stick..?

I used Bart's PE to create an image but it only alows one to create a bootable cd. How do i go about creating a bootable me stick?

Gave it a try but does not work. Seems like my HP Mini 2140 does not support boot from a mem stick. It says disk read error......

What a hassle to reload the operating system if you dont have a CD Rom....
