Installation Problems

Just Installed ubuntu 9.04 on a newly formatted hard drive and everything is has sweet as it should be, However while installing ubuntu restricted extras it is trying to connect to an international sever to download the flashplugin-installer and I am capped so it is just timing out and retrying again and again.

This has happened before and if i stop it. It will not finish installing the program, allow me to enter synaptic package manager or allow me to install anything else as it was interrupted and it will tell me to run the error sudo dpkg -- configure -a command which then tries to download it again, to no avail, so it is a vicious cycle.

Is there anything i can do to cancel installing the package?

I'v had a similar issue before, i just restarted my pc, then went into synaptic package manager, click on settings, repository, and choose a S.A mirror, then reload and try again

Certain packages can only be downloaded from international mirrors, and hence you will need some form of international connection. I would recommend getting a small pre-paid account for this, and then running a routing script to separate your international and local bandwidth.

It would be really easy to set up, either on a temporary or permanent basis, and perhaps easier than trying to stop it grabbing packages internationally.

Tried that, but it didn't work. I'm already using the S.A mirror but for that particular program it tries to connect to their main server which is hosted internationally

Ah yes... the infamous flash plugin.
Try the following in your terminal:
"sudo apt-get remove flashplugin-installer flashplugin-nonfree"
"sudo dpkg -- configure -a"
It should remove it from your list and you will be able to try it again when you have international.
The international it needs is for the actual flash codecs and is only available on international. It's 3.6MB.
