Installation taking forever with no useful feedback

I've ordered the fibre bundle from Afrihost. The flat I'm in has a fibre line already installed (there when we moved in), the router has arrived from Afrihost, but I'm missing the bit in the middle. Afrihost tell me to wait on Telkom, and I have no way of knowing where Telkom is in the process...

Two questions then:
1. As far as I know, all I need is the modem that sits between the entry point and the router - correct? If so, why on earth do I even need Telkom? Can I not just sort this out myself? Is there something I'm not seeing / missing here?
2. Is there any way to get any sort of insight into how much longer this is going to take? Answers like "Telkom will get in touch when they get in touch" make me want to drive a railroad spike through my brain...

Has the CPE been installed yet? It's possible that the Fibre termination point has been installed, but that Openserve still needs to install the actual CPE.
