I've had this same problem. You need to get rid of all traces of it. Delete it completely in Program Files. Ensure the folder itself is deleted. Try unlocker (free app) for deleting files windows says you can't delete. Open Task Manager and ensure there are no processes running that are tied to office. Office has a lot of new processes, like groove which is the biggest culprit with issues when you remove office. Your first attempt at removing it,did you use, add/remove programs?
Essentially System Restore doesn't work, groove hides away and still comes back up. Make sure all the files are deleted from Program Files. What sometimes happens also is, that you can't remove parts of office in add/remove programs... check if you've still got remnants of it sitting in your installed programs by going to add/remove programs. If you've got items there that you're not able to remove then you need an app to remove them.
The app actually comes from Microsoft themselves which is ironic
It's called "Windows Installer Cleanup Utility" - you need to run this to get rid of all traces of office which essentially is probably everywhere - office is process heavy.
I've got the exe Windows Installer Cleanup Utility if you need. Just PM me or email me at
[email protected] and I'll send it to you.
So once you've deleted it in Program Files completely. I recommend running a registry cleaner. I use Eusing free reg cleaner (google it). Then use Windows Installer Cleanup Utility and remove all traces in add/remove programs.
Once that's done. Try a reboot and try install again.
Wash, rinse repeat.
