tools needed

obviously an empty hdd or partition too :)
  1. boot with xp cd and install
  2. boot with vista cd and choose repair boot
  3. install and run vistabootpro (from vista)
  4. on first screen use add os at bottom, add legacy windows and select its drive/partition.
  5. from the xp cd's i386 copy these 2 files to the root of the xp drive/partition NTDETECT and NTLDR.

note
in vistabootpro i used the legacy boot editor just to check that its pointing to the right place from the top menu.

If you asked me a few minutes ago, "Can I install XP after installing Vista?", I would have told you to go fly a kite or something...

Thx Necuno :)

aaaw cool, revisiting the OP to install XP after a windows 7 installation. now firstly why would i want to do this !!! well because there is the one or two titles that just wont work on a vista/win7 64x enviroment even if its a 'perfect' os, being for example call of cthulhu and vampire bloodlines. both of them require a jump through the hoops to get to work, especially vampire bloodlines don't work natively on a 64x OS not to mention the whole vista/win7 thing puts it off in various bugs.

that apart, how to get xp on after windows 7 ? well simple just follow the OP as it still applies and works perfectly :), obviously don't use the vista cd to repair :D
