Instant Messaging set to explode internationally

The only sms'ing I do these days is from vodacoms website. The rest is of my messaging if from the blackberry - PIN messages and email. Just gave my missus an old blackberry and already its saving me money.

Telkom/Vodacom's dying gasp - must . . protect . . revenue . . stream . . .

Vodacom and MTN (the two major cellular connectivity providers) don’t want to talk about IM. Despite repeated requests, they refuse to give comment on the issue.

If one examines the SMS figures they have, it’s not hard to see why they won’t talk.

'cos phonecalls are such a fcuking ripoff!

/me reads thread title
/me panics and shuts down all IM apps running

that was close, dont want some IM app exploding in my face ;)

Ok, that was my lame post for the day :o

If MTN and Vodacom were competitors they'd be chomping at the bit to be the first to provide such a service to their subscribers.

Roll on number portability.

But that would just cause a 'price war', we wouldn't want that happening now do we?

Course not - war is bad.

Well a little comparison.

In november i was waiting for adsl to b installed an the only way i could communicate after hours was with my celly.

Noticably my cell bill went to about 500 bucks that month.
In december everytyhing was working and I have msn, gtalk an skype running at the same time.
My bills have dropped from 500 to 400 to 250 in the course of two months.
That's just because me and my friends that i phone 99% of the time all decided that to use these proggies rather than the normal cell/telkom infrastructure.

Re mxit. yeah haven't had a lot of fun there though. I got it installed and everything but it just takes to long to log in so i usually don't bother with it.

MXit is nice but it never connects properly the first log in. I just use email on my cellphone, much easier.

Likewise. Its still cheaper to set you phone to download/check for messages every hour, than to SMS. Me and the girldfriend using this method - usually with a miss-call to say 'hello, you've got mail'.

BRING ON THE COMPETITION!!

My phone is too outdated, it wont work on my phone :(

(no its not a brick, its the T68i :( )
