Hi.
Here's the scenario. You forget to pull up your handbrake in the parking lot. Car rolls back and hit another car. Slight bumper bender on other car but yours fine. Just a scratch you can live with . Thing is other car had existing damage to bumper (as well as light and bonnet looks like from same accident previously) and pics will confirm no way you car could have done it .
What does insurance do in this case ? Do u now fix the whole lot or how can your damage be proven ( if that makes any sense )

Considering the other damage is older, I would guess your insurance won't pay to have that damage repaired.

Corbin, do you really care? its a 3rd party claim against your insurance, so you dont pay excess, and it doesnt really bother you...

Panelbeaters will look at you funny when you want only one dent removed from the bumper :D

It would be hard to 'repair' just the portion you have damaged.

The insurance company should deal with it....

A word of caution thou..... if you claim liability the ensure that the third party is compensated, or else you can still be pursued through a civil court for a menial amount, worst case scenario is having an adverse credit rating and you being issued a judgment.

Your life when it comes to credit and any new applications for credit will be stagnated until the judgement is rescinded.

JUST SORT OUT THE OTHER PARTIES DAMAGE !!!!!!

Y dont I pay excess ? Surely my insurance will demand it.
And yes I know no panel shop will only repair part of it , so i'm interested to know what will insurance think of this case. I'm sure its not unique , but would be interesting. I also dont want to be the left regretting how I handle this.

.... an assessor's job is to determine the costs associated with damage when claiming from insurance.

If insurance won't sort out, just offer him a contribution towards the damage caused by you.

Am I reading this correctly ? U saying the other party is the one that needs to do the runaround since i'm not claiming anything ?

Ouch :( Very last resort. These things are costly

Speak to your insurance. Get them to look at and state how much they will pay. If the claiming person has an issue with that they can then discuss with your insurance as they will be dealing with the issue then and not you.

1) Report the possible TP claim to your broker and make sure they understand there is old damage to the vehicle.
2) You shouldn't be charged an excess and if you are then get your broker to insure you at a better insurer.
3) The cost of the claim will go against your loss ratio an could have a negative effect on premiums in due course.
4) You shouldn't loose a CFG / NCB (claim free group or No claim bonus) if you do refer to point 2)
5) The insurer will hopefully cut costs to a minimum and also absorb any chance of any other actions against you.

Good luck.
