I think I heard something about a designated drivers...

If car is insured, no matter who drives it, as long as he's licenced, insurance pays out with no further queries and all?

Read your contract.

My car is insured for only myself and my wife to drive, if someone else drives it and has an accident I pay an additional excess.

My motorcycle is insured only to be used by me. If anyone else rides it then it's not insured.

It's up to the us as clients to decide that feature in our policies.

You can insure your vehicle for ANY licensed driver... but obviously, the premium is slightly higher and/or the required excess might be higher.

or... you specify which drivers and the premiums might go down according to their risk profile. (an 18 year old male will pay a higher premium than a 26 year old female)

But... if your vehicle is insured with full comprehensive cover, for any licensed driver... that should be that. IF (touch wood) you are in an accident, they'll just ask for a copy of the driver's license.

However, I'm not 100% sure about these "Take me home" services. I know the services themselves have retarded t&c's that absolve their liability, but I'm not sure about the insurance companies. I'm actually going to follow up on that with my broker... Thanks for bringing it up!

No offence to you but...

You just pushed a wrong button.

Why do insurance ads/talks always compare insurance for people of different ages?

Most policies state usual/normal drivers and therefore the "once off" shouldn't affect the cover except age of driver and length of having a license.
It's the same as when you take your car in for a service and they test drive the vehicle etc.
I would however check with "direct insurers" because their covers tend to favor the insurers more than traditional insurers.

In my policy I had to state "regular drivers" but the policy covers the vehicle on condition that the owner (me) has granted permission for somebody else to drive the vehicle.

Risk profile. Plain and simple!
A 18 year old is more likely o have a car accident than a 25 year old. It's like that all over the world!
Some actuary works out some sort of risk curve... and they calculate your premiums like that.

Listen... I think insurance companies suck... but you can't blame them here. I remember how reckless I used to drive as I got my license... and how different I drive now. More experience, more wisdom, and less testosterone... not to mention... no more ideas of fitting turbos, exhausts, super rocket boosters that come out the boot... No more desiring that my little Honda ballade could drop M3's through 4th gear.
No more driving home after being impaired from the intake of alcohol to the degree that would destroy me now!

Nope... I'm sorry... you can't argue that insurance companies shouldn't charge youngsters more.

My policy states than I'm the regular drive of my car, if someone else were to drive my car it would still be covered as long as I mostly drive the car and not them.

what i want to see is insurance for 18 yr old female/male compared

and the say... 26 year old female/male.

While I know not figures for direct age comparo, I know women get off very easily on insurance. Friend of mine is currently 20 and has been driving since 16, had license at 18 and has done advanced safety courses etc which bring your premiums down as well. His baby sister who just got her license has a premium about 60% of what his is.

I know for a fact that you pay less when you hit 25...
females pay less than males in general...
Car rental companies also charge more when renting below 25.

it's just the way it is... it sucks when you're in that bracket... but it's awesome when you're out ;p

In most contracts the insurance will pay out BUT with further queries, additional excess and possibly an investigation.

Depends on YOUR contract. I quote my broker in my email comms with him last year when buying my new car:

Me:
My wife reminded me last night that she has to also be listed as a
primary driver.

Him:
No problem - I never specify drivers - EXTREMELY risky! I just say the
insured and his/her spouse and anyone else they give permission to drive.

That is the safest.

Risk profiling takes into consideration your age, how long you have had your licence and any previous accidents. Having a licence for less than a year increases your risk the most.

I once got offered a job transporting cars but had to wait for my licence to be more than a year old as the companies insurance would not cover me. My age made no difference to them (I was 23 back then)

Yip those are the benefits of going through a reputable broker and insurer. I doubt ond would get away with that going direct through a direct insurer.
