Hi there,

I am trying to spec my new mobo + processor and ram.

I see the intel 1366 and 1566 boards.
WHat's the difference?
Is it only the tri channel ram capability and slightly faster processor?

Also, can anyone share an opinion on the difference in performance of an i5 vs i7.

The LGA 1366 boards are available exclusively for the i7 9xx CPUs, whereas LGA 1156 is for the i7 8xxs, the i5s and i3s. LGA 1366 also support 6-core CPUs while LGA 1156 does not.
The i7s are a lot more than "slightly" faster than the i5s.
Many of the lower-end LGA 1156 boards only include support for ATI CrossFire, while almost all LGA 1366 boards include support for both CrossFire and SLI.
Triple-channel is a nice to have but real-world performance gains are not that impressive.

If you need maximum performance, go with an LGA 1366 board/i7 9xx combo - but be prepared to pay. Otherwise a decent LGA 1156 board will give you decent features and price, and you have a far larger range of CPUs to choose from.

Performance wise - if you are only gaming go i5 / Phenom X4. The i7 generally only gives 2 or 3 fps more in games. If you do video/image editing or use other similar heavily threaded apps go for the i7. Simple as that.
