Intel launches new computer chips

Hi Guys

So can anyone give us the specs on these chips ?

Here is the lowdown, the Intel 1,83GHz E6300 Core 2 Duo costs as much as the AMD x2 4200+ and performs between the 4200 and 4600 perfomance wise, and it can overclock like hell...

I've been following this chip up for at least two months, so I'll give you a quick rundown of them.

Quick summary of the architecture
The Core 2 Duo, or 'Conroe' as it is also known as, is the second generation of the Core architecture. It is a withdrawal from the old Netburst architecture that plagued the Pentium 4 CPUs. It's has Intel's EM64T and SSE4 instructions built in.

The Core 2 chips generate a lot less heat and they only use about 30W per core. The chips performance is incredible to say the least. A $300 E6600 performs a little better than a $1000 FX-62 from AMD.

The key to this performance is that it has a wide execution bus, allowing it to process up to 4 instructions per cycle. (and in some rare cases 5). The pipeline is almost half as long as the pipelines in the Prescott which help it immensely.

Even though the architecture has gone through radical ground-up redevelopment, it still proves to be very overclockable.

AFAIK Merom is only going to be launched in a month or so

Coredue 1st generation is available, you're refering to 2nd generation thats only available in a month.

The Core (1) Duo were available early in the year. The Core 2 Duo is currently the only chip available for Desktops and Servers. Also, its good news if you already own a Core (1) Duo, as the new Core 2 Duo Laptop CPU is pin compatible with the old Core Duo, requiring at most a BIOs update.

So, if you want to upgrade to a Merom and your laptop allows you to upgrade the CPU, then all you need to do is, update the BIOS, take the old one out and put the old one in.

Also, apparently, both Intel and AMD will release their true quad core CPUs in the fourth quarter of this year!

Intels one would be code-named Kentsworth and is basically two Conroes sandwiched together.

Intel has realy pulled of a marvel of engineering if you look at their speed/power advances over their previous core archecture.
