Intel officially retires all 6th-gen processors

Intel has released a product change notification document announcing the retirement of all Intel 6th-generation Skylake desktop processors.

The chip manufacturer had already discontinued a number of desktop CPUs two years ago, but it has now categorised the entire generation as end-of-life.

this needs a poll to see who is on what gen chip.... myself I'm still on gen 2 with no real reason to upgrade....

EDIT: i7 2600, about on par with a i5-8500 though there would be a slight speed increase from what I remember when I last checked I think.

Gen 4 here (i7 4790).

A i3 8100 is now basically on par with my CPU.

2x gen 4 desktop, i7 4460 and 4790.
1x gen 4 laptop, i7 4720HQ
2x gen 7 laptop, i7 7700HQ

If I ever upgrade the desktops they'll be AMD as they're so much better price/performance for the newer gens.

Built a recent 2200G for office, was really quite impressed that it's basically fanless and the entire system cost ~R1.5k less than the Intel equivalent (since cooler and thermal paste Inc, cheaper mobo and CPU a little cheaper).

Likewise. My gaming PC still uses an i7-4790 and my daily driver uses an i5-4460. I have had no need to date to upgrade.

I will be purchasing a new gaming PC somewhere in late 2019 or early 2020. Just want to see AMD’s new CPUs and GPUs and Intel’s new GPU.

Haswell was retired in 2017. That are 3 years to EOL.

AMD is looking attractive these days, slightly slower but not in any way that most would notice and as mentioned VERY cheaper.

Thats fine, but Intel didn't retire Spectre/Meltdown vulnerability though.
