Upgrading to the Intel Sandy Bridge and your help would be appreciated
Thinking getting the

  • i7 2600 or 2600k (whats the difference?)
  • Gigabyte GA-P67A-UD3 LGA1155 Dual-Channel DDR3 CrossFireX
  • 4gb ddr3 ram
  • 500gb sata 3 hd

He means with a stock heatsink. No watercooling, hence air.
Cerebus put it real bluntly but those are the basics, the K overclocks better then the one without.

In all honesty though I would try hold off until end of February. More motherboards will be hitting our shores as well as the bulkier orders so prices should come down a little and there will be more to choose from motherboard wise.

BUT! What are you going to be using it for?
If its gaming in my opinion then the i7 is the overkill. i5 2500 for 1k less will do you just fine.
If you want to do video editing and 3D apps. Wait to see what amd and bulldozer have to offer :P

What's happened in Sandy Bridge is that Intel moved the clock generator off the die and onto the motherboard, so the fsb is tied to a 100mhz base frequency, which moves only very very little. So the only way to overclock is to change the multiplier, which is only possible on a K CPU - 2500K or 2600K.

But because of the 32nm fabrication, the CPUs will overclock to absolutely insane frequencies - 4.4ghz is possible on the stock bogstandard Intel cooler. So if you buy a high-end SB part without the ability to OC, it totally takes the fun out of it, at least IMHO.

Nothing wrong with Gigabyte boards IMO, but yeah, you will have more options soon.

going to get the ASUS Intel P67, LGA1155, 4xDual DDR3 hd

Was thinking of the following vga, is it any good? was hoping for something a bit cheaper...
R1600 - XFX ATI Radeon 5770 1GB DDR5

i can get the
R955 - ASUS ATI Radeon HD5670, 1GB DDR5, 128bit

is there a big dif between these?

What kinda budget do you have and what do you want to use the pc for primarily?

I'm sure you can add an extra R400 and get a decent 6850 or Gtx460 (786MB) card.

Edit: I see cerebus beat me to it.

HD Video Editing 30% of the time. Have already gone over my budget by about R500 so was looking for something to cut down on and the only thing i cud was the vga. What would you recommend instead?

Edit

Can also get the XFX ATI Radeon 5750 700M 1GB DDR5 for 1200 so this would save me R400

I would recommend increasing your budget. There's no other option, unless you want to cut down on the CPU which you clearly don't want. Frontosa has 2600k for 2200 exc. What is your budget anyway?

Well not sure how much you paying for ram, but above prices are pretty cheap. Go for the blue one if you can, has tighter timing.
Prophecy has a cheapy intel motherboard for 1k. Doesnt have any bells or whistles http://www.prophecy.co.za/intel-buffalo-flat-dp67ba-lga1155-dualchannel-ddr3-pcie-p-87379.html
but then you dont really need anything special?
Then once thats said and done you should have some extra cash and go for what above peeps recommended. CS5 has some support for cuda core in nvidia gfx cards. But either of those 2 cards should be more then enough :)

R7000. If i am only doing HD Editing 30% of the time maximum, would you say i am better getting the i5?

And with that 7k you only need the following:
i7 2600 or 2600k (whats the difference?)
Gigabyte GA-P67A-UD3 LGA1155 Dual-Channel DDR3 CrossFireX
4gb ddr3 ram
500gb sata 3 hd

? Or what else needs to go in?
