Intel Sandy Bridge Upgrade - help wanted

Yea... or get the 2600 if you don't plan on overclocking. You don't NEED the highest of the high end cpu do you?
nope, i was going to get the 2600 but will look elsewhere to see if i can get a cheaper price.

If you get the 2600, then you could probably pick up a cheaper H67 board, since it seems a waste to get a p67, with the non-K chip's limited turbo multiplyer overclocking.

MOBO: R982
CPU: R2143
GPU: R1495
RAM: R495
PSU: R608
Case you can choose that to your taste.
R5800. So you got extra to play around with, half goes to chassis. maybe a bit into getting a low end asus or gigabyte like this R1293 board or better psu.

Hmm, a discreet H67 board :O

Which h67 motherboard would you recommend, is the p67 more for overclocking? Also do the h67 mobo support usb 3?

Hmm yah that wasnt actually pointed out. So used to building ppl machines that don't overclock. Mr Feesh. You going to overclock at all?
And yes all the motherboards listed have 2x SATA6 and USB3 and P67 is for overclocking. H67 does support the turbo mode though that takes the processor to 3.7ghz. Not 100% sure of this but apparently it does increase multiplier by 1 or 2.

All USB 3.0 in Sandy Bridge comes from 3rd party chips, so it depends on the specific motherboard. You would need to look at the features you need in a motherboard, and then find a H67 mobo that has those, e.g. powered eSATA, and stuff like that. But as has already been said, you might be better off with a 2500K and P67. Only if you're not keen on overclocking and/or will gain more benefit from the HyperThreading on the 2600 than a straight clock speed boost would it be better to get the 2600.

edit: lol well answered, sorry I can't give you heads up on a specific mobo.

Thanks for the help. Not keen on overclocking at all so think i will be better off with the 2600 and a h67 mobo. Just need to find the best h67 mobo.

Im actually building a small machine for a friend at the moment. Just a light gamer really, but the i5 2400 for R1700 at 3.1ghz is also not a super bad option for those on a tighter budget. Its a R500 difference for 300mhz compared to the 2500k/ But then you are paying extra for the K and the overclocking functionality of it.

Hay yeah, with the money you save on the motherboard you would be able to get the i7 2600!
Nice one completely forgot about that :P

what you think of this mother board

H67BL Intel Media Series, 'Cold Lake', LGA1155, 4xDual, DDR3 1333, Graphics on CPU (HDMI, DVID,VGA),
1xPCIx16,
2xPCIx1,
3xPCI, 4xSATA3, 2x
eSATA, Gbe Lan, 8chSound,
Max 12xUSB

i think it supports usb 3? can get it for R956

It says "Two USB 3.0 ports" in the specs, but I'd check with the people selling it since the link goes to the DH67BL and your post says H67BL. I think it is probably just a typo, but better safe than sorry.

edit: also the BL stands for Bearup Lake, and there is a DH67CL, which is Cold Lake.

my typo mean the dh67cl

think its Intel's best dh67 mobo? also is it best to go for a Full ATX form factor

I don't know much about Intel's own boards, but it looks fine feature wise.

Has 2 x USB 3.0 according to specs.

Sybaratic.co.za have come in lower on the 2500k at R1943.

I would also get the 1gig memory version of the 460, maybe even one that's overclocked if you can afford it.
