I recently acquired an old Intel server, unfortunately with no drives though.

So I went and purchased 2 SAS Drives and the BIOS just does not pick the drives up. Am I doing something wrong or is there a compatibility issue with the drive and possibly a fix?

Server: SR2500ALBRPR - Intel Board S5000PALR
Drive: Toshiba Part # MG03-SCA-100

Thanks in advance.

IMO you shouldn't have bought SAS drives. Does it have a RAID controller?

According to the specs on Intels site yes. The original owner really couldn't tell me much.

It could be the same issue as older motherboards that do not support WIN 98.
I see that the server was launched in 2006.
Might be that the box is too old.

It have embedded RAID 0 and 1, but can be upgraded to RAID5.

It uses SATA hard drives.

And it's EOL.

Well aware its EOL.

It has a SAS backplane so it uses both - This i have confirmed by checking the backplane part number.

Don't particularly need raid 5... really just want raid 1.

On another note - Returning the sas drives and going to see if normal sata will work was just hoping there was maybe something I was doing wrong as now I gotta do more waiting to get it running.

If you want experiment more with SAS drives, I have some. Condition unknown, haven't got controller to test it. Otherwise these drives will be stripped of magnets. :)

You'd need a sas raid controller card plugged into a pci slot and connected to the backplane before you can setup the raid array. Once the array has been set up the bios will detect it as a drive which you can install to.

If a raid controller is present then check the cable between it and the back plane.
If you do decide to buy a raid controller make sure to check the intel site first for supported models on that board of yours.
