Intel supercomputer could bring AIDS vaccine for SA a step closer

Thanx again to our beloved t-scum for getting in the way of important research with their high prices.
 
For those that does not know what Sludge is talking about, here is a qoute from one of the researchers:

“We have such poor internet connectivity that there’s no way any real research can be performed so we are only in the first step of providing a solution,”
 
Currently, the institute and others are forced to conduct much of their research by borrowing time on high-powered computer systems around the world. With SA’s slow and expensive bandwidth that often involves downloading data onto DVDs and posting them.

But Telkom showed us how a doctor performed surgery on a child thousands of kilometers away, using the internet.

The only existing supercomputer in SA is a Cray computer, which is designed to work on specific problems and is not very easy to use, said Hide.

Not so sure about that... Telkom does have an HP Integrity Superdome. See this entry at TOP500.

They probably need it to keep track of all their money.
 
Don't forget this quote...

They could use ADSL - no hangon, that would most likely constitute abuse, and be shaped beyond usability anyway.
