Hi

Last night my right index finger started to hurt badly, there is this constant throbbing and I can feel my heart beat there. The flip side of the nail (fingerprint side) is swollen and numb. The fingernail itself seemed fine. I soaked it in hot water which also hurt as the finger is very sensitive. I cut my fingernails a couple days ago and thought that maybe I had cut the nail to short

This morning when I woke up I noticed a dark spot beneath the nail. Now I am paranoid that it might be a splinter beneath my nail. I tried to look under the nail to see if it is a splinter but the pain is just to unbereable to proceed. I am hoping that it is not a splinter, as it wasnt there last night, and more likely blood and inflamation. I am not sure how to confirm if it is a splinter or just blood or how to treat it

The fingernail is very sore to touch and the the constant throbbing hurst too

Any suggestions and advice welcome

PS - Amputation not an option :)

Thanks
Mark

Well yeah that is a very good suggestion but that I can only do after work, looking for short term solution

If the nail is going blue you can drill a small hole in the top of your nail to relieve pressure...

I have done the making a small hole suggestion before, works like a bomb.

Go to a doctor if the thought of doing that scares you.

has your finger been anywhere "special" lately?

whatever you do make sure the thing you drill with is sterilized

i made a hole once with a toothpick i think it was

yeah few days later i had a huge finger

go to the pharmacist

im here :D ...

the dark red spot is blood sir. You cut too far into your nail and most of the time when you pull the end part of the nail of it tears the skin under the nail, which is painful. Its common in people that bite their nails. Clean it up with some rubbing alcohol and put a band aid on it tightly and wait it out.

Dont lift the nail because you cut it so close that most of your nail is probably at the point where its attached to the skin. If its towards the end of your finger make sure it doesnt get ingrown.

Works like a bomb indeed. Take a pin, heat it up and pierce the nail. It offers almost instant relief and won't kill you.

i bite my nails and yeah the pain is bad when you bite too much off ...

thing is mine was never numb and swollen

it normally stings when you eat cause of the salt but thats about it

Call the undertaker for a quote. You must be prepared for all eventualities

A cricket ball hit my one finger when I was at school in the practice nets, it also swelled and was out of action for a week, but was never right and very sensitive, I ignored it for about 2yrs - then plucked up the courage to visit a doc who gave me 3 injections under the nail and proceeded to "dig" around pulling out a piece of fingernail like splinter.

Just wondering why the op didn't post a picture of his nail. Would make life quite easy
